What’s in a nickname?

IT happened 40 years ago, but still got a great laugh today. When artist Ramsay and her husband, Dr. Norman Goldstein, were on a coast-to-coast reunion tour with family Mug shotand friends, they found themselves seated at dinner with Wendy King. She and hubby Ed King hosted an intellectual talk show (when there were such things) back on KDKA in Pittsburgh. Each night on "Party Line," the two would pose a question called the "Party Pretzel," and Ramsay recalled one with vividness. The Kings' question was, "What did the words 'Steptoe' and 'Treasure' have in common?" The eyes of a very young Ramsay lit up and she began dialing furiously, eventually getting through. Asked for her answer, Ramsay confidently stated, " 'Steptoe' and 'Treasure' are the two nicknames that Dad has for Mom." Dead air followed, and while Wendy King acknowledged the answer she was looking for was "Two names for the state of Montana," she gave the Party Pretzel award to Ramsay for sheer inventiveness ... One other footnote from Ramsay's travels: When she told her folks that the name of the preacher I grew up listening to was Ramsay, they informed her, "Our current minister's name is Donnelly." Goosebumps ensued ...

YOU think Honolulu is an early-to-bed town? How then to explain the Pussycat Lounge of the Wave Waikiki, now featuring a kind of modern, hip-hop burlesque where the first show starts at 11:30 p.m. ...

Annie Oakley II

WITH so many different actresses vying to appear in revivals of "Annie Get Your Gun," regardless of age, Irlene Mandrell of the Mandrell Sisters may have found the perfect role. Not only is she a singer, dancer and comedienne, Irlene is also an accomplished shooter, as was Annie Oakley. She was the first woman to compete in the BuckMaster Classic hunting competition, and she won it! Now you can see her trigger finger in action, since Mandrell is the hostess of this year's Lanai Pine Sporting Clays Hawaii Pacific Open. Both local and mainland shooters will be vying for $20,000 in cash prizes at the event, slated for Oct. 19-22. Previous hosts of the Open have been Tom Selleck and Arnold Schwarzenegger ...

EVERY time I read something about golfer Bobby Kokx, who was runner-up in the Jennie K. Invitational at Mid-Pacific Country Club, I'm reminded of my birthplace, Keokuk, Iowa. KOKX were the call letters of the radio station there ...

THEY called themselves the "Polynesian Men," when they performed at the Mufi Hannemann mayoral fund-raiser. That would be the candidate and his brothers, Gus, a candidate for Congress from American Samoa, and Nephi, the one professional entertainer of the three. In fact, Nephi once had a group called The City & County, but Mufi wasn't a member. Now he's trying to take over not the group, but the actual city and county ...

The Brothers Cazimero

Robert and Roland Cazimero will be featured on Emme Tomimbang's next special airing Saturday on KGMB-TV. They reveal they'll be joining Bette Midler at her annual "Hulaween" party in New York in October and then sing a couple of songs to mark their Silver Anniversary. And that silver-tongued chef Jean-Marie Josselin of A Pacific Cafe cooks up a Maui Onion Soup in honor of the onion festival at Whaler's Village ...
