HOUSTON -- Truby or not to be?

Right now, it's Truby.

Hawaii's Chris Truby was at it again last night, whacking the baseball around a major-league diamond.

Major League Baseball Truby, a former Damien Memorial High School star, went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs in Houston's 6-5, 11-inning loss to the New York Mets at Enron Field.

Truby's three-run double in the fifth inning gave the Astros a 5-4 lead, and that stood until Derek Bell's homer with two out in the ninth tied it.

Last Friday, Truby bashed two home runs, and Sunday night, he drilled a grand slam and finished with six RBIs. In both games, he helped push the Astros past the Montreal Expos.

"The last couple of nights I've come up with a lot of guys on base and I've had some good pitches to hit," Truby said. "The one tonight was a good pitch. It was just a fly ball that was able to find a gap. I looked up and saw where the center fielder was and I couldn't believe it."

Truby, brought up to the majors from Triple-A New Orleans in mid-June to fill in for injured third baseman Ken Caminiti, is trying to win a permanent spot in the Houston lineup next year.

Another Hawaii major-leaguer, former Hawaii Pacific University standout Benny Agbayani, also socked a double in the game -- his 13th two-bagger of the season for the Mets -- and he scored two runs.

Kurt Abbott's 11th-inning homer gave the Mets the victory.

Bell, who played for the Astros last year when he clashed with Houston manager Larry Dierker, caught Moises Alou's fly ball to end the game. He was about to throw the ball into the stands, but shook his head and kept it instead.

The game was the first of the season between the two teams, and it was the first major-league game Truby and Agbayani played against each other.

Agbayani, who has appeared in 80 games this season, is batting .306 while Truby raised his average to .278.

The three-game series continues today and tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. HST.
