The Kansai All-Stars scored in each of the first six innings to beat the Hawaii Island Movers, 8-2, in the championship game of the Hawaii International Baseball Championship Tournament Sunday at Rainbow Stadium.

Bryce Uegawachi had two of the five Hawaii hits.

The Movers finished the season with an overall record of 17-23.

Estrella goes for pitching

Pitching is the name of the game for University of Hawaii-Hilo head baseball coach Joey Estrella.

Five of his recruits will take the mound for the Vulcans in 2001.

The new pitchers are Anthony Bernal from Cuesta (Calif.) College, Johnny Dudoit of state champion Molokai High School, Allen Phillips from Peninsula (Calif.) College, Brian Unger from Southwestern Illinois College and Zeb Watts from Delta (Calif.) College.

Estrella also signed Scott Hammer from Edmonds (Wash.) Community College. He batted .335 with 17 doubles, three homers and a league-leading 48 RBIs in 2000.

Gouveia wins in Vegas

Hawaii state shifter kart champion Ryan Gouveia went to Las Vegas and won the Blueberry Classic 125cc class last week.

Shifter karts are more than go-karts. They have a sequential six-speed transmission, and can reach speeds of 110 mph with the chassis just an inch off the ground.

Gouveia, an 18-year old Mid-Pacific Institute graduate, will be attending Chaminade University in the fall.

Wahine in soccer poll

The University of Hawaii Wahine soccer team is ranked fourth in the Western Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll.

Fresno State, 14-6-2 a year ago, is the favorite to win the eight-team conference, according to the poll, followed by Southern Methodist and San Jose State.

After UH, the next four teams in the poll, in order, are Texas Christian, Texas-El Paso, Tulsa and Nevada.

Sasada, Hayashi in front

Brian Sasada and Kevin Hayashi shot 3-under 69s and are the co-leaders after the first round of the Aloha Section 2000 AT&T Stroke Play Championship at the Mauna Kea Golf Course on the Big Island.

Kirk Nelson and Brad Bowen are tied for second with even-par 72s. Dennis Rose leads the senior division after firing a 72. Rodney Acia is one shot back.

The second round will be played today with the finals starting tomorrow at 7 a.m.

Trio takes Pepsi tourney

The team of Jason Salmeri, Stevie Li and Linda Nelson won the Pepsi Mixed Challenge Beach Volleyball Tournament at Queen's Beach in Waikiki last weekend.

Clay Stanley, Marc Haine and Kissi Haine finished second, losing to the eventual champions, 15-8, in the final match.

The tournament helped raise funds for the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Gomi rises in Army golf

Clayton Gomi birdied the final hole to win the Army Hawaii Invitational golf tournament last weekend at Leilehua Golf Course.

Gomi finished with a three-round total of 3-under 213, while runner-ups Brandan Kop and Del-Marc Fujita were one shot back at 214. Art Fujita won the senior flight at 224.

Elam, others in CFL

Former University of Hawaii defensive lineman Matt Elam is a starter for the Winnipeg Bluebombers this season.

Elam was particularly impressive in his first two games when he totaled five tackles, four quarterback pressures and a half-sack.

Quarterback Brian Ah Yat, who starred at Iolani and the University of Montana, is also a member of the Bluebombers, but he had knee surgery and will miss six weeks.

In one preseason game, Ah Yat completed 8-of-10 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown before sustaining the knee injury.

At least two other Hawaii players are in the CFL -- Troy Bailey (St. Louis School, University of Oregon) is a defensive lineman on the Calgary Stampeders' injured reserve list, and Dylan Ching (Kamehameha, University of San Diego) is a slotback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and caught a pass for six yards in his first game against Toronto.
