HBO unsure about filming
Vietnam War series in isles

Star-Bulletin Staff

HBO officials remain undecided whether the television pilot for its Vietnam War television series "Lessons Learned" will be filmed in Hawaii.

However, second unit and aerial photography for the pilot will be done on Oahu next month , a state film official said.

An HBO producer last month cited Hawaii's higher production costs as one of several factors why the pilot might have to be be filmed elsewhere, most likely California.

If the pilot is picked up by HBO, the series would begin filming on Oahu early next year.

The production company on July 29 received a right-of-entry permit from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources to base its main location in the Maunawili area. The production company plans to keep the permit "active" until a decision on the series is made, a Hawaii film official said.

"Lessons Learned" would be 12 hour-long episodes. The stories center on a survival school in Vietnam.

Ferry is still making its Middle Loch runs

The Middle Loch segment of the state's Wikiwiki Ferry project has been extended through at least Aug. 17, according to the Department of Transportation.

The second leg of the Wikiwiki -- from Middle Loch to Aloha Tower in the morning and then back in the afternoon -- was supposed to end last Friday.

But DOT officials are still securing permits for a run from Iroquois Point that was to begin this month. That freed up the ferry to continue operations out of Middle Loch.
