Pearl City wins regional

The Pearl City Pearls won the Babe Ruth Pacific Southwest Regional 16-and-under softball tournament at Lodi, Calif., yesterday.

Pearl City went 3-0 in the tourney and will advance to the World Series in Millville, N.J.

Some of the Pearl City players won't be able to make it to the World Series, because they'll be returning home to begin the school year.

In the championship game, Pearl City's Leo Sing Chow and Kehau Yamaguchi combined on a five-inning no-hitter in a 14-1 win over Lodi.

Chinen races to victory

James Chinen raced to a win in the Waipahu Transmission 150 auto race at the Hawaii Motor Speedway Saturday night.

He held off the hard-charging Dean Freitas, and Albert Ternora Jr. finished third in the sprint car feature.

Other Saturday main event winners were Clay Haumea in super stock, Ikaika O'Brien in modified, Johnathan Dos Santos in the first midget race, Cindy Texeira in the second midget race, Mike Paahana in the third midget race, Brandon Ternora in mini stock, Rodney Capello in super modified, and Glen Soares in Cruzer Bruzer, which was run clockwise.

Dos Santos was competing for the first time.

Racing will be held again Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Hawaii Motor Speedway.

Simms back from meet

Former Mililani High School track star Vera Simms has returned from the USATF National Junior Olympics in Buffalo, N.Y., where she qualified for the finals and placed third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 60.04 seconds.

Simms will be headed for the University of Michigan's college of engineering at the end of this month.

Rare tie in baseball final

The Aloha Knights and Hiroshima Big Six tied, 2-2, in the title game of the Hawaii International Baseball Championship at Rainbow Stadium yesterday.

The game went 10 innings and a tie was declared.

Michael Stewart and Randy Ortmayer had two hits each for the Knights.

Yoshimitsu Shintani cracked three hits, including a double for the visitors from Japan.

Waianae to nationals

The Waianae Blastaz, the state ASA12-and-under softball champions, left yesterday for the national championship tournament in College Station, Texas.

The tournament is scheduled for Wednesday through Sunday.

The Blastaz are 24-0 this season, and they won a tournament in Los Angeles in June.
