Sapp kept busy
during isle stay

DEPARTING today for her home in L.A. is Carolyn Sapp. For those of you with short memories, Carolyn went on from being Miss Hawaii to become Miss America and even did an Mug shotautobiographical movie about an abusive relationship. She's been in Kona, not just to visit her folks who still live there, but to do color commentary on the World Youth Basketball Tournament 2000 for ESPN. The tourney, featuring dozens of teams, is due to air next month. And while there, People magazine photographed her in a bikini splashing around in the surf for an upcoming feature on former Miss Americas, due out in October. While obliging the crew's request for her to get soaked, Carolyn said she kept thinking it was more in line with the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition than People ...

SINCE her week in the islands was largely devoted to sports, Carolyn stopped by Don Murphy's "Pigskin Pigout," a fund-raiser that Murph figures topped the $100,000 mark for the Warriors. He was so busy with the auction that he didn't even know he had a former Miss America in the house. She came in with her doctor of 10 years, Dr. Alan Chung, uncle of little Alana Dung, the youngster who died after bone marrow surgery. And while here, Carolyn took time out from visiting her grandma to have a root canal from Dr. Derrick Fu. The anesthetic now worn off, Carolyn is heading back to L.A. where she and her film production company, Pier to Pier Pictures, are working on a new project ...

Successful Hunt

THREE decades ago, a USC volleyball and basketball player named Steve Hunt, was en route to Hawaii looking for some "summer fun." He found himself on the plane seated next to Bob Turnbull, known at that time as the Chaplain of Waikiki Beach. A friendship developed as Turnbull helped Hunt find a Waikiki apartment, get regular work as an extra on "Hawaii Five-O," and attend his "Sun and Soul Talk" service at Waikiki Beach where Hunt recalls, "I finally got my head on straight." They lost track of one another until the other day when Hunt, who lives in Hermosa Beach, drove to Orange County to visit his mom in a retirement home. While working out in a 24-hour fitness gym there, he realized that a man talking about Hawaii was his long-lost friend, Turnbull. "You don't know this," Hunt told him, "but I've been praying for 30 years that God would hook me up with you again." The gym reunion ends on a happy note: Hunt is flying Turnbull and wife Yvonne to his private, 20-acre estate on Kauai to officiate at his wedding on Aug. 19. What is it that's said about mysterious ways? ...

TV spots for John Travolta's new film, "Lucky Numbers," in which he plays a zany weatherman, show him in one segment with leis and doing a hula. Inspired by his wife, ex-Punahou girl Kelly Preston, perhaps? ...

Acerbic Serb

SERBIAN volleyball player Dejan Miladinovic attended the Saturday night birthday party of fellow Serb Diane Brusin at Havana Cabana. I recognized him at once, easy since he's 6-foot-7 and shaves his head. He was laughing and giggling and having a great time. I mentioned that when I saw him in uniform on the volleyball court, he always looked mean and nasty. He howled with laughter, "That's another face," he said, admiting to the kind of gamesmanship one sees in athletic competition ...
