Anglers from Japan
win HIBT event

KAILUA-KONA -- "One big fish could win it all," was heard on every boat yesterday, the final day of the 41st Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.

Six fish were caught with three tagged and released and three boated.

The tension was high at the end of the day because all competitors knew the tournament winner would be decided by the weight of the marlin caught by Toshihiro Inoue of the Forest Club of Japan.

Members of the Indiana Jones Tokyo Fishing Club watched as the large marlin was weighed in at 343 pounds, just pounds less than the marlin caught Thursday by team member Kazuyuki Sako.

The Forest Club received 343 points for the fish's weight and 100 bonus points for largest fish of the day, but it wasn't enough to top Indiana Jones, which had 461 points coming into the day and received 100 bonus points for the largest billfish of the tournament.

In the final tally, the winning Tokyo club beat out the second-place Forest Club, 561-443.

Mililani victorious

Mililani routed Omaha, Neb., 10-0, in a 2000 PONY Baseball Mustang World Series game Thursday at Irving, Texas.

Waylen Sing Chow was the winning pitcher, while teammates Joshua Meikle (2-for-3, double, 3 RBIs) and Kevin Curd (double, two RBIs) led the offense.

Mililani was scheduled to play against Irving yesterday, needing a win to move into the championship bracket today.

Wie, Wali outstanding

Michelle Wie and Khan Wali were named outstanding sports persons of July by the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Wie, 10, became the youngest amateur ever to play in a USGA golf championship when she qualified for and played in the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship, held in Aberdeen, N.C.

Wali, a June graduate of Kaimuki High School, earned six gold medals and one silver, and set three Division D national records, in the Junior National Wheelchair Games in San Jose, Calif.

Wie and Wali will be honored at Monday's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Chris Bisho and Darren Hernandez will be the featured speakers at Monday's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Bisho is the head football coach at Damien Memorial High School, and Hernandez is the new head football coach at the new Kapolei High School.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 at the Pagoda Restaurant.

Wong, Heidger still No. 1

Hawaii's Kevin Wong and teammate Rob Heidger are ranked No. 1 for the U.S. beach volleyball Olympic qualification list. The duo retained their top-ranking despite being eliminated from the Austria Open after winning just one of three matches yesterday.

NCAA summer playoffs

The NCAA Summer League playoffs open tonight at Kaimuki High School with the Electricians taking on Gaspro at 6 p.m. and Honolulu Ford meeting Mango at 7:30 p.m.

Last night at Kaimuki, Mango beat the Electricians, 122-108, and Crossover upset Honolulu Ford, 95-91, as regular-season play came to an end.

Former University of Hawaii swingman Geremy Robinson led Mango (7-3) with 39 points while another former UH player, Justice Sueing, added 30 in the win.

UH guard Predrag Savovic scored 47 points for the Electricians (8-2).

UH originally planned to mail the tickets in late July, but the production schedule was pushed back due to a change in the ticket backs.
