SHOPPING FANATIC
Maintaining and promoting Chinese culture is store owner Mona Henning's goal at Tradewind East in the Dole Cannery. Touch of China
at Tradewind EastHenning, a painter, said her friends took an interest in the objects she brought back from her travels to China, including merchandise dating back to the 1800s, requesting to buy items.
With the help of business partner Honing Zhong, who lives in China, Henning was able to bring in more goods with the same personal touch she used when shopping for friends. Tradewind East opened in February 1999.
Most popular are feng shui water fountains made from landscaping rocks.
Displayed in front of the glass window is a bright red cheong-sam with silk-embroidered gold dragons and red flowers for $79.
Other dresses made in Hangzhou, China, come in aqua, black, gold and royal blue.
Bead necklaces incorporate jade, amber and other exotic stones, and range from $50 to $300.
Henning's friend Amy Lum helps out at the store twice a week and said furniture is also a big seller.
A 19th century elmwood small chest sells for $175.
Elmwood arm chairs from the 1800s cost $395 each.
Ceramic teapots are also available in different shapes and sizes. A small, dark brown teapot in the shape of a pumpkin cost $37. Displayed in a glass cabinet is a misty green teapot for $158.
"The purpose is to try to bring back Chinese culture to new generation," said Lum.
Tradewind East is at 650 Iwilei Road A180. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays.
