Akaka will transfer to the Rehabilitation Center at Kuakini for five days, then recuperate at home a week before resuming his schedule at the end of this month.
He said scheduling the elective procedure during the August recess will minimize interference with his work schedule.
He said he regrets missing the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, "but I am confident that my recovery will be swift, and by taking care of this now, I will be able to fulfill commitments planned for the rest of the year and into 2001."
Akaka said his doctors have told him that his only restriction in the coming months will be on his golf. "It was suggested that I concentrate on my short game."
He expects to participate in ceremonies this month in Honolulu honoring the 22 Asian Pacific American veterans recently awarded the Medal of Honor.
He also plans to be at congressional hearings statewide from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1 on legislation to clarify the political relationship between Native Hawaiians and the United States.
