State land department honors special staffers

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has recognized several employees for outstanding performance.

Samuel Lemmo was named "Employee of the Year" for drafting legislation for beach restoration enacted in 1999 and for making related contributions.

Patrick Costales, Oahu forestry and wildlife manager, was cited as "Manager of the Year," having won praise from staff as being "their mentor, full of aloha, incredibly patient, having a clear head and always fair."

Manny Emiliano Jr., boating and ocean recreation engineer, was recognized for his performance in expediting projects by seeking and acquiring federal financing commitments of more than $6.7 million.

A "Team of the Year" award went to the Hawaii Forestry and Communities Initiative field inventory team, which has mapped and evaluated valuable commercial timber resources and has offered employment to displaced sugar workers.

Maui family services wins federal loan

Maui Family Support Services of Wailuku will receive a $435,000 federal loan to acquire an office building to expand its programs involving child abuse and neglect cases.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development program approved a conditional commitment for the loan, which will be extended by Bank of Hawaii.

The building will house more than 30 employees.

"This guaranteed loan will enable Maui Family Support Services to acquire the space they need to serve children and their families," said U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink.

Maui Family Support Services received a direct loan of $750,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture rural Development program in fiscal 1999.

4 HPD officers honored for life-saving actions

Four officers have received Honolulu Police Department certificates of merit for two life-saving incidents.

Officers Dayle Morita and Russell Pereira were cited for going into Nuuanu Stream near the intersection of River and Pauahi streets on June 10 to pull out a woman.

They were able to revive the woman by administering chest compressions.

Officers Brian Taniguchi and Antonio Perry Jr. were cited for assisting a retired firefighter and two civilians in reviving a man who collapsed at a company picnic at Ala Moana Beach Park in April.

Weinberg Foundation gives Scouts $900,000

The Aloha Council Boy Scouts of America has received a $900,000 gift from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation.

The check completes the two-year, $3 million Boy Scout Capital Campaign to build the New Oahu Aloha Council Center.

The center, in Nuuanu Valley, will serve 28,000 youths and adults of the Aloha Council.

Firefighters battle Waialua brush fire

Firefighters were battling a brush fire early today near the agricultural experimental station on Kaukonahua Road in Waialua.

Firefighters arrived at 3:44 p.m. yesterday. At its peak, six Honolulu Fire Department engines, two tankers and a helicopter were at the scene.

Fire damages 3 units in military housing

The Honolulu Fire Department helped federal firefighters extinguish a blaze at military townhomes on the Pearl City peninsula yesterday.

The fire damaged three units at 186 Parker Court.

HFD responded to the 6:08 p.m. alarm with six companies to assist military firefighters.

California woman, 56, drowns off Kauai coast

HAENA, KAUAI -- A 56-year-old California woman drowned Saturday at Kee Beach along the Na Pali coast.

The fire department received a missing-person report at 4:45 p.m., and at 6:20 p.m., the woman's body was found 150 to 200 yards offshore near Hanakoa, four miles from Kee.
