U.S. softball team
to play at UH

The U.S. Olympic softball team wraps up its domestic tour before heading to Sydney with six exhibition games at the University of Hawaii Wahine Softball Stadium.

The U.S. team will take on the Women's Professional Softball League All-Stars in a single game Sept. 2 and a doubleheader Sept. 3. The second game of the doubleheader will be televised live nationally on ESPN.

On Sept. 6, the U.S. team meets the Wahine in a doubleheader at 5 and 7 p.m. The U.S. team will also play Hawaii Pacific in a single game on Sept. 7 at 2 p.m.

The WPSL all-star team could include former UH All-American Dana Degan, now playing for the Ohio Pride.

Movers skip by All-Stars

The Hawaii Island Movers edged the Oahu All-Stars, 8-7, in 11 innings last night at Rainbow Stadium.

Duke Sardinha went 4-for-6 with a triple to lead the Movers and singled in the winning run with two outs in the 11th. Sardinha, Chris Catanzaro and Kainoa Obrey all drove in two runs for the winners.

Danny Kimura collected two hits for the All-Stars.

Pigskin Pigout Aug. 3

Murphy's Bar & Grill is hosting the University of Hawaii Rainbow Pigskin Pigout for the fifth straight year, Aug. 3, starting at 5:30 p.m.

The goal is to raise $100,000 for the UH football program, with most of the money going toward the team's training table.

The cost for the event is $100, which includes food and entertainment. There also will be live auctions.

Octavia overall winner

Octavia, from Santa Cruz, Calif., was the overall winner of the 2,070 mile San Francisco to Kaneohe West Marine Pacific Cup yacht race.

Octavia finished in 10 days, 12 hours, and 35 minutes, for overall honors among 80 yachts in the 11th biennial event.

First to arrive from San Francisco was Waikiki Yacht club entry Pegasus (8 days, 10 minutes and 36 seconds).

The handicap rating system, meant to equalize opportunities among all yachts, gave Pegasus fourth overall in the fleet.

While there are still more boats on the water, the race was called complete at noon yesterday.

Heat Wave, a 36-foot sloop, skippered by Rick Shema out of Kaneohe, finished third in Division C.

OCC women's tourney

The Oahu Country Club Ladies' Invitational Golf Tournament is Aug. 10-11 at OCC.

The 36-hole stroke-play tournament will have four flights, with the low net winner as champion.

The event is open to amateur women belonging to an Hawaii State Women's Golf Association member club, 16 years or older, and with a USGA July 1 handicap index of 25.9 or less.

The entry fee is $110, which includes green and cart fees, lunch on both tournament days and prizes. An optional practice round can be played the morning of Aug. 7 for $20.
