Isle Pages

THIS listing of new books about Hawaii or by Hawaii writers is published on the last Friday monthly.

Bullet "Pests of Paradise: First Aid and Medical Treatment of Injuries from Hawaii's Animals": By Susan Scott and Craig Thomas (University of Hawai'i Press); 191 pages; paperback; ISBN 0-8248-2252-8; $19.95

Susan Scott and Craig Thomas love Hawaii, really they do. But they have developed something of an expertise on its hazards.

"Pests of Paradise: First Aid and Medical Treatment of Injuries from Hawaii's Animals" is the latest in a trio of books designed to help emergency room personnel, parents, educators and others identify and treat injury and illness.

"All Stings Considered: First Aid and Medical Treatment of Hawaii's Marine Injuries" was the pair's first medical reference book. In its wake, they were bombarded with questions on everything from the dangers of plumeria sap to bee stings. So they wrote two more books.

"Poisonous Plants of Paradise: First Aid and Medical Treatment of Injuries from Hawaii's Plants" was released this month and covered in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin's June 2 garden column. "Pests" is due out in September and details injuries and illnesses from Hawaii's animals.

If creepy, crawly critters give you the heebie geebies, the book may be an uncomfortable read. Electron micrograph depictions of insects are illustrative, but also make the creatures look fearsome. Press on though, and you'll find a wealth of information.

The authors give first-aid treatment advice in all cases where it applies. They address home remedy myths, like meat tenderizer for bee stings (studies have found no benefit). And they include an advanced medical treatment section in each case to help professionals diagnose and treat these injuries.

Every creature from the nearly invisible mite to the wild pig is included. The book also has general information about proper first aid. Like the other guides, "Pests" includes both statistical information and interesting anecdotes.

Thomas is an emergency care physician and Scott is a researcher and author of the Star-Bulletin's Oceanwatch column.

Bullet "Short-Timers in Paradise:" By John Wythe White (Anoai Press); paperback; ISBN 0-9653971-9-x; $14.95

John White, an avid surfer and former Star-Bulletin music reviewer, gives an insider's glimpse about the fluidity of life in Hawaii, painting through his series of short essays a vivid picture of such accidental inhabitants as 19th century castaway John Young to New Age scammers to "Wave-Riding Hydroponic Man."

Fellow writer Paul Theroux says of White's "Short-Timers in Paradise," "Like surfing, the sport of walking on water, this book too embodies the mystery and glory of the islands."

Bullet "Kauai Trailblazers: Where to Hike, Snorkel, Bike, Paddle, Surf": By Jerry and Janine Sprout (Diamond Valley Co.); 222 pages; paperback; ISBN 0-9670072-1-6; $14.95

Jerry and Janine Sprout divide their time between California and Kauai, but it's obvious they know the Garden Island well. This book offers an intimate peek at heiau, movie locations, farmer's markets, wildlife sanctuaries, reefs and waterfalls, whether one chooses to make the journey on foot, through water or by automobile.

The book starts by asking "What do you want to do today?" The accompanying list of options include "Souvenir Shopping," "Museums and Attractions," "Free Hula Shows," "Sea Ventures," "Places to Watch Surfers," "Places to Paddle in Privacy," "Birdwatcher Hikes" at Kilauea Lighthouse and Hanalei Wildlife Refuge, and more. Refer back to the Trailhead Directory for the appropriate pages

Kauai is a small island and, at a glimpse, one that's easy to get to know. This book allows you to find out all the sites you've missed.
