Star-BulletinHail to the Green and White? Add black and silver, as of today. The University of Hawaii was to unveil the new logo for its athletic teams, as well as logo apparel and merchandise, early this afternoon at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Also to be introduced was a new color scheme as part of what the university is calling its "new identity system."
Gone is the four-color rainbow attached to the letters "UH." In its place are several versions with a stylized block "H" using a kapa print trim or insert.
Added to the color scheme are black and silver. A number of the Rainbow teams had already been using black -- including the football team for its helmets last season, and the women's volleyball team for uniform tops for several years. Silver is associated with the Manoa mist.
"People will either love it or hate it," said Jim Manke, interim director for university and community relations. "It will be a very distinctive mark for the University of Hawaii. But it will take some getting used to.
"And the teams will have to win. Otherwise, people will blame it on the (new) logo."
Manke said his office had been receiving complaints from alumni and others in the community ever since it was announced that the Rainbow logo was being replaced.
The new apparel was to go on sale today at various outlets, including the Rainbowtique stores at the Sheriff Center and Ward Centre.
