Garcia sorry he
criticized rival surfer

Current rating's leader Sunny Garcia of Hawaii offered an official apology to Australian Michael Campbell and the Association of Surfing Professionals after disparaging comments he made Sunday to the media.

Garcia, who finished second behind Campbell in the Bluetorch Pro in Huntington Beach, Calif., was unable to contain his emotions once the final ended and the judges had rewarded his opponent the victory.

"I, Sunny Garcia, would like to apologize for the statements I made to the press about Mick Campbell," started the hand-written letter presented by the Hawaiian yesterday. "I let my temper get the best of me and would like to say sorry to Mick and the association that I represent because I have done the sport injustice for this outburst. There has never been any personal problem between Mick and I. .... Mick surfed a great final and I was bitter for losing."
