When firefighters Thomas "La'anui" Akana and Henry Kuhns saw a man attacking a woman outside their fire station in Pawaa last night, the former police officers just reacted.

"We heard some yelling and screaming and the guy was trying to take her purse away," said Kuhns. "He was swinging her around the road and dragging her to the sidewalk.

"When I yelled, the guy ran," he said.

Akana pursued the suspect and Kuhns followed. Akana was able to corral the man, who was trying to catch a taxi cab, near the Kapiolani Blockbuster Video.

As Akana wrestled with the suspect, 21, another man, 20, attempted to break the suspect free. Kuhns took the second man down and detained him for police.

Kuhns said he wasn't worried about whether the suspects were armed or dangerous, he knew he had to back up his partner. The firefighters are both 10-year veterans of the fire department. They credit their police training with helping subdue the suspects.

Neither man was injured. The extent of the injuries to the woman was not available.

The 21-year-old man was booked for robbery, kidnapping and assault. The younger man, who police say was a lookout, was arrested for robbery and hindering prosecution.
