Its about time
Current work on Kalanianaole Highway is just the latest in a
series of upgrades to the main roadway connecting East Honolulu
to downtown Honolulu. In 1954, the Star-Bulletin showed "how
broad Kalanianaole Highway will be when the four-lane divided
highway is completed in June. The present three-lane roadway is
at right. The row of banyans in the middle will grace the medial
strip. The primary roadbed stretches away on the left."
In 1973, there was work again to widen Kalanianaole. Here's a
scene fronting Aina Haina Shopping Center.
By Kathryn Bender, Star-Bulletin
Five years after East Honolulu residents had to put up with five
years of road-widening work (1990-95), crews started coning,
blocking and digging again. This month, two more years of
work began. The photo was taken from the same location
as the photo above.
Photographs often are the best way to show dramatic changes in Hawaii, providing an easy update on landmarks, persons and events. At other times, however, photos showing minimal changes during the years remind us that the more things change, the more they remain the same. Look for examples of big and little changes every Monday in "It's about time," which will inform, update and prod a few memories.
