Scientists from around the world will discuss remote sensing and its importance to the Earth's health during meetings at the Hilton Hawaiian Village today through Friday.

"Taking the Pulse of the Planet" is the theme of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium.

Remote sensing is the observation of the Earth from distant vantage points, usually by satellites or aircraft.

Leaders of space agencies in Canada, Japan, Europe and the United States will discuss the use of remote sensing for managing the global environment.

Presentations from scientists will range from innovations in remote sensing education to use of remote sensing to observe and report on changes in the planet.

Hawaii scientists will present papers on observing volcanic activity, plumes and lava flows.

National and other cooperative projects will be discussed, such as NASA's Earth Observing System and Europe's Environmental Satellite.
