Royals promote
By Dave Reardon
pitcher Kaanoi
Star-BulletinIt didn't take Kahi Kaanoi long to make an impression in professional baseball.
After just four games with the Kansas City Royals' Gulf Coast rookie-league team, the 2000 Kamehameha Schools graduate was promoted yesterday to Single-A Charleston (W.Va.) of the South Atlantic League.
The right-hander was expected to join the Alley Cats in Savannah, Ga., today.
The South Atlantic League is a full-season Single-A league, meaning Kaanoi skipped the level of short-season Single-A.
In 16 innings at Gulf Coast, Kaanoi -- who throws a 95 mph fastball -- allowed one earned run on 13 hits, striking out 20 and walking two.
Kaanoi led Kamehameha to the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship last spring and was named to the Star-Bulletin's all-state team.
He was selected by the Royals in the eighth round of May's draft.
