Gabriel is coaching
at Maryknoll

Question: Whatever happened to Garrett Gabriel?

Answer: Quarterback Garrett Gabriel graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1990 with a degree in sociology and the university's single-season and career passing records.

Since 1998, he has been the varsity boys basketball coach at Maryknoll High School, where he was an all-state football and basketball player.

Gabriel said that when he got the offer to return to his alma mater to coach basketball, his "first love," and physical education, "I jumped at it."

Prior to his return to Maryknoll, Gabriel coached at Radford and St. Louis and worked as a parole officer and a youth counselor.

Gabriel and Dori, his wife of 5-1/2 years, have a 3-1/2-year-old named Garrison and expect another child in December.

A decade after graduation, he is still best remembered for leading UH to a 59-28 upset of arch-rival Brigham Young University.

"People still shake my hand after all these years. It's something we can look back at and be proud of."
