Hawaii kayakers
take bronze

Sprint paddlers Mike Stock of Kailua and Honolulu's Jim Farnum helped the U.S. finish second at the 2000 Pan-American Championships held last weekend at Lake Placid, N.Y.

Stock and Farnum earned a bronze medal as part of the K-4 1,000-meter boat that included former Hawaii resident Mike Harbold.

More than 200 racers from Canada, Chile, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and the United States competed. Canada took first and Argentina placed third.

Low winds plague yachts

La Diana trundled along toward Kaneohe from San Francisco while the rest of the West Marine Pacific Cup Fleet was stuck in 5-knot air yesterday.

The 35-foot doublehanded entry from Division 1 is up to 250 miles ahead of competition and experiencing good sailing weather.

Oena is the new leader in doublehanded Division 2.

Diminished Capacity made little progress, but held on to the fully crewed yachts Division A lead.

Other leaders are Alicante (B), Elan (C), Bodacious (D), Lina and White Caps (F), Triumph (G) and Rage (H).

Among Hawaii's entries, Pali Uli is fifth in Division 1, Heat Wave is among a close pack near the lead of Division C, and Pegasus is third in Division H.

Movers edge Oilers

The Hawaii Island Movers came from behind to tip the Peninsula Oilers, 4-3, in an Alaska Baseball League game at Rainbow Stadium last night.

The Movers scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings on RBI singles by Duke Sardinha and Paki Lum to wipe out a 3-2 deficit.

Kona Sampaio had two of the Movers' seven hits.

Hawaii pitchers Chad Giannetti, Adrian Contreras and Ben Siff held Peninsula to six hits. Contreras earned the win.

Softball in paradise set

The Softball in Paradise 2000 Tournament will be held at Mililani District Park July 20-22.

Ten 18-and-under teams from Hawaii will compete against teams from North Carolina, Oklahoma, California, Texas and Kansas.

Two main events are set for Saturday -- the Hawaii vs. Mainland title game at 3:30 p.m. and an All-Star game at 5:30 p.m.

The tourney is being run by HWB Foundation -- a non-profit entity of Hawaii Winter Baseball.
