Akebono dumps
Dejima, opens 2-step
lead in Nagoya sumo

Sunday's action

NAGOYA, July 17 (Kyodo) -- Yokozuna Akebono dumped defending champion Dejima to a third loss at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on Monday, gaining a measure of revenge for last year's loss to the ozeki in the championship playoff.

Akebono's ninth straight victory at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium also left the yokozuna with a two-win advantage over a thinning field in the chase for the Emperor's Cup as he seeks to end a three-year winless drought.

In key bouts, ozeki Chiyotaikai slapped down sekiwake Kaio for his seventh win while sekiwake Tochiazuma also notched win No. 7 by plowing out top maegashira Akinoshima.

No. 9 meagashira Chiyotenzan fell to makuuchi newcomer Aminishiki, leaving both wrestlers at 7-2, along with Mongolia's Kyokutenho and Takamisakari, who pulled down American Sentoryu.

In Monday's main event, Akebono muscled Dejima to the edge of the ring off the initial charge and appeared ready to dispose of his ozeki nemesis, when the defending champion got some leverage down low and walked the 230-kilogram yokozuna back across the ring.

Akebono kept his cool at the edge. Controlling the back of the ozeki's belt, he turned Dejima around and then made sure he landed on top as both wrestlers fell off the raised ring.

A year ago, Akebono lost to Dejima twice -- once in regulation and again in the championship playoff -- when it appeared that the Hawaiian-born yokozuna would finally win his first Emperor's Cup since the 1997 summer tourney.

In a match pitting wrestlers with 6-2 records, Chiyotaikai stunned Kaio by slipping to the right at the face-off and sending the sekiwake sprawling on all fours at the center of the ring.

Tochiazuma, hoping to keep alive the string of first-time tournament champions this year, kept his head buried into the chest of Akinoshima (5-4) and bulldozed the top maegashira.

Earlier, Chiyotenzan came out on the short end of a cow-toss with 13th-ranked Aminishiki, hitting the dirt first as both wrestlers toppled off the dohyo and left the arena with 7-2 records.

In other bouts, yokozuna Musashimaru thrust out winless Tamkasuga for his sixth win, but Musashigawa stable teammates Musoyama and Miyabiyama were saddled with embarrassing losses.

Ozeki Musoyama (3-6) backed Tochinohana (4-5) to the edge of the ring, but was then pulled out as the top maegashira escaped to the right. Miyabiyama (4-5) belly-flopped off the initial charge as No. 2 maegashira Takanowaka (3-6) jumped out of the way.

Former ozeki Takanonami, meanwhile, needing 10 wins in Nagoya to regain his rank, was twisted out by No. 4 maegashira Oginishiki (5-4) for his third loss in a row and fifth of the tourney.

American Sentoryu, fighting as a No. 13 maegashira, held the early advantage with a series of hard slaps and thrusts but was dragged down to a fourth loss by No. 11 Takamisakari (7-2) when he gave up control of the belt.

Mongolia's Kyokutenho made quick work of Higonoumi (4-5), backing the fifth-ranked maegashira out of the ring in textbook style, while compatriot Kyokushuzan (3-6) shoved out hapless Tochinonada (1-8).

Sekiwake Kaio
hangs 2nd defeat on
Dejima in Nagoya sumo

NAGOYA, July 16 (Kyodo) - Sekiwake Kaio handed defending champion Dejima a second loss Sunday, giving yokozuna Akebono a little breathing room as the Hawaiian giant remained perfect at 8-0 midway through the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.

Kaio's one-sided victory over Dejima leaves No. 9 maegashira Chiyotenzan, at 7-1, the only wrestler a step behind the leader as the 15-day tournament heads into its second week at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium.

Kaio, seeking to follow up on his championship in May with a promotion to ozeki, wasted little time against Dejima at the face-off, backing the Musashigawa stable ozeki to the edge of the ring and then dropping with a thud over the edge for his sixth win of the tourney.

It was Kaio's second upset win in a row after Saturday's triumph over yokozuna Takanohana, who withdrew from the 15-day event earlier Sunday because of a sprained elbow he sustained Thursday.

Akebono, seeing his way to the championship opening up, had little trouble with another of the Musashigawa stable's trio of ozeki, marching out Musoyama (3-5) to keep his perfect record intact.

Musashigawa miseries went one step further as sekiwake Tochiazuma (6-2) barged out grand champion Musashimaru to saddle the yokozuna with a third loss.

Ozeki Chiyotaikai (6-2) won by default after Takanohana's withdrawal and newly promoted ozeki Miyabiyama overcame fourth-ranked maegashira Oginishiki, leaving both on 4-4.

In an early bout, Chiyotenzan had his hands full with No.13 maegashira Sentoryu (5-3) but was able to come back from the edge of the ring and ram the American into the ringside seats for his seventh win.

Also, Mongolia's No. 8 maegashira Kyokushuzan picked up his second victory of the tourney in unorthodox fashion by grabbing the back of 14th-ranked Aogiyama's belt to send him nose-diving out of the ring with a rear push-down.

Kyukutenho, fighting one rank higher than his Mongolian compatriot, powered out No. 11 maegashira Takamisakari, leaving both wrestlers 6-2.
