Wong extends
qualifying lead

LIGNANO, Italy - Kevin Wong of Hawaii and partner Rob Heidger finished fifth in the Italian Open, extending their lead in the points standings for an Olympic team berth.

Wong, a Punahou graduate, and Heidger now have 1,898 points on the FIVB Beach Volleyball Tour list. Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson, who missed the weekend tournament, are second at 1,586.

The top two teams from each country will go on to Sydney.

Phengsavath's putt decisive

Joe Phengsavath shot a one-under-par 212 to win the Oahu Country Club's 37th Annual Men's Invitational golf tournament.

On the final hole of the three-round tournament, Phengsavath broke a tie with Jim Seki Jr. by sinking an eight-foot birdie putt.

Seki had a chance to tie, but his bunker shot for birdie stopped inches from the hole.

Seki finished with an even-par 213. Paul Kimura placed third at 214.

Outrigger tips Lanikai

Outrigger Canoe Club finished second in the final race of the day but it was enough to leapfrog past Lanikai for the title of the John D. Kaupiko Regatta at Keehi Lagoon yesterday.

Going into the 35th race of the day, the men's masters-35, Lanikai led Outrigger, 65-63. Outrigger earned four points for its runner-up spot while Lanikai earned one, giving Outrigger its first Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association title of the season --67-66.

Lanikai won the Chris Olds Memorial Trophy for the junior crews division (12-18).

In the A Division for clubs with 15-and-fewer crews, Keahiakahoe held off Anuenue, 26-20. Anuenue doubled up in the masters-53 division as the husband and wife duo of Nappy and Anona Napoleon steered their respective crews to victory.

OHCRA's championships will be Sunday at Keehi Lagoon.

Lokahi breezes to win

Lokahi paddled to a 31-point victory in the Waikiki Beach Boys Regatta at Waikiki Beach yesterday in the Hui Wa'a short season.

Lokahi racked up 73 points, winning the AA Division handily over runner-up Kaneohe with 42 points.

Koa Kai took a slim victory in the A Division, winning by four points over second place Windward Kai, 31-27.

The Hui Wa'a championships are Saturday at Keehi Lagoon.

Movers, Oilers split

The Hawaii Island Movers split a Alaska Baseball League doubleheader against the Peninsula Oilers yesterday at Rainbow Stadium.

Justin Cayetano, with relief help from Ben Siff, earned a 4-3 pitching win in the opener.

The Oilers punched out 12 hits in the second game in a 12-6 victory.

Brian Rooke had three hits in the two games for the Movers.

Brown is Top Gun

Pearl City's Tom Brown grabbed the Top Gun title at the NAPA Summer Championship drag meet on Saturday and yesterday at Hawaii Raceway Park in Kapolei.

Brown, driving a nitrous-burning Chevy dragster, beat out Dennis Krob's funny car in the best-of-three elimination.

The Snyder Machine Works rail, with Mark Tavares driving, took third place.

La Diana in front

La Diana still holds the overall lead in the West Marine Pacific Cup race by 216 miles, but is expected to face competition from the biggest and fastest California yachts who are clicking off nearly 230 daily miles despite soft winds.

La Diana is competing in the doublehanded-1 division. The race is from San Francisco to Kaneohe.

Punk Dolphin is ahead of Oeno in the doublehanded-2 division.
