Police are investigating the homicide of an elderly woman who was found on the floor of her home on Makaha Valley Road at 5:45 a.m. yesterday.

Neighbors say the 67-year-old victim had health problems and had recently suffered a stroke.

Her caretaker and a couple had been staying with her.

"I cannot believe who would do such a thing," said Ruth Milliora, who lives on a lane next to the woman's house.

"She drinks, she sleeps, she don't bother nobody."

Milliora said that she was up at 4:30 a.m. and didn't hear any noise at the house, adding that the woman had a dog that would have barked had a stranger tried to enter.

According to Milliora, the woman had been robbed three weeks ago.

Linda Rivera, who lives across the street, said the woman frequently caught the bus to visit friends in Honolulu.

Since the bus stop is in front of Rivera's house, the woman often stopped by to say hello.

"She was a really nice lady," she said. "She didn't bother anybody; no one bothered her."

Rivera said the woman had never mentioned any family.

Jonalinn Silva said the woman used to own a bar downtown but had retired a few years ago.

Silva said the woman's living room lights were on when she returned from a movie after 1 a.m. yesterday, but she didn't hear any noise coming from the house.

She also said that the woman was careful to keep her gate locked.

Silva said her sister, who frequently checked in on the elderly woman, was with her until early yesterday morning.

Police have not yet released the victim's name.
