The University of Hawaii will have three more players in Hula Bowl uniforms next January. Rainbow trio to
Hula BowlDefensive end Joe Correia, safety Dee Miller and defensive tackle Doug Sims have been invited to the all-star football classic to be played at Wailuku's War Memorial Stadium on Jan. 20.
The three join Rainbow teammate, linebacker Robert Kemfort, on the roster.
Movers lose on the road
The Hawaii Island Movers fell to the Mat-Su Miners, 7-1, yesterday at Palmer, Alaska.Leftfielder Douglas Jackson had two of the Movers' five hits and Brian Rooke knocked in Hawaii's lone run in the third with a double.
Marvin Wong started and took the loss, allowing four hits and three runs in two-and-a-third innings.
Bodyboarders triumph
Hawaii bodyboarders won six of eight titles yesterday at the U.S. Amateur Surfing Championships at Kewalo Basin.Winning their respective divisions were: Kalani Kamaka (men), Lindsey Yasui (women), Roger Mamuad (juniors), Kala Freitas (launch), Alika Gaspar (drop-knee) and Tyler Ching-Johnson (menehune). Hawaii participants also had seven second-place finishes in the eight divisions.
The surfing portion of the national event continues through tomorrow's finals at Ala Moana Bowls.
20th Tinman tomorrow
Nine triathletes who have completed every previous Tinman Triathlon will be among the field of tomorrow's 20th edition of the multi-sport event.Competing in their 20th race are: Amy Barcia Harpstrite, Dewey Millar, Donahue Fujii, Keith Arakaki, Russell Goo, Leland How, Bob Geaguero, Linda Kaiser and Bob Vierck.
Over 1,000 participants are expected for the event that begins with a 5:45 a.m. 800-meter swim at Ala Moana Beach. The swim is followed by a 25-mile bike from Ala Moana Park to Hawaii Kai and back to Kapiolani Park.
A 6-2-mile run around Diamond Head caps the event with the runners using the same finish line as the one used by the Honolulu Marathon.
Asao, Shimozaki win
Kellen-Floyd Asao and Joan Shimozaki won their respective divisions in the Callaway Golf Hawaii State Junior Championship at the Links at Kuilima Thursday.Asao carded an even-par 72 to finish at 148, one stroke ahead of first-round leader Grant Yasui in the boys 15-18 division.
Shimozaki shot a final round 74 for a 148, four strokes ahead of Rachel Kyono.
Other division winners were: Moses Mahalekulu (13-14 boys); Lindsay Hong (13-14 girls); Jordan Cox (11-12 boys); Amanda Wilson (11-12 girls); Machael Sato (10-under boys), and Joy Kim (10-under girls).
Over 80 junior golfers from around the state competed in the two-day event at Turtle Bay.
Select team in semis
Brandy Richardson scored 26 points and Alyson Martin added 13 as the Hawaii Select girls' basketball team won its quarterfinal game yesterday at the U.S. Junior Nationals in Las Vegas.The Hawaii team finished 3-0 in pool play. Yesterday, the team hit 10 3-pointers in defeating Colorado Hoopsters I, 75-68, in a first-round playoff game.
Hawaii Select has hit 51 3-pointers in its seven tournament games. The team will play a California squad in today's semifinals.
La Diana still in lead
The 35 foot La Diana unofficially leads the fleet by nearly 250 miles as of yesterday's position report of the West Marine Pacific Cup race from San Francisco to Kaneohe Bay.La Diana is sailed doublehanded by Fred and Brendan Huffman.
Leading doublehanded Division 2, is Punk Dolphin skippered by Jonathan Livingston, crewed by Andrew Hamilton.
Halcyon maintains its lead in fully crewed Division A, Red Sky still leads Division B, Soldini moved up three places to lead Division C and Bodacious leads Division D.
Osprey has passed Cha-Ching for the Division E lead. The Division F and handicap fleet leader is Ocatavia, a Santa Cruz 50, skippered by Shepard Kent.
The Santa Cruz 52, Division G is led by Kokopelli2.
