Weezer brings light-hearted pop to Worlds'.



Worlds of fun

Adding to the summer concert schedule, Worlds' (formerly World Cafe) is preparing to welcome international reggae star Eek-A-Mouse next week, and alternative goofballs Weezer Aug. 14.

Eek-A-Mouse will perform for an 18 and older crowd at "Marty Dread's Reggae Night," with doors opening 9 p.m. Wednesday. Tickets are on sale now at $15 in advance. The cost will be $17.50 at the door.

Meanwhile, $20 tickets go on sale tomorrow for Weezer, in an all-ages show that will start at 7:30 p.m. The band is best known for light-hearted, radio-friendly pop such as "Buddy Holly" and "Undone -- The Sweater Song."

Get tickets at the usual outlets, including Radio Free Music Center, Tower Records-Kahala and Pearl Kai, Tower Video Kapiolani, Hungry Ear Kailua, Tempo Music, Jelly's-Puck's Alley and Pearl Kai, the University of Hawaii Campus Center and military outlets. Tickets may also be charged at 526-4400.

It's party time!

Plan to stay a long time at the Waikiki Shell Saturday, as the Aloha 'Aina Party presents "An Old Fashion Political Rally, Concert & Craft Fair."

Gates open at 3 p.m. for the celebration of music and craft.

Performers include Sudden Rush from the Big Island, Ale'a, Tony Conjugacion, Nina Keali'iwahamana, Robert Kekaula, Maui's Richard Ho'opi'i, Kauai's Liko Martin, Sonny Ching & Halau O Na Mamo O Pu'uanahulu, Mapuana & Kihei deSilva & Halau Mohala 'Ilima, Hokulani & Larry DeRego & Halau o Hokulani, Vicky Holt Takamine & Pua Ali'i 'Ilima, Halau Na Kamalei, Halau Na Pualei o Likolehua, Lihau and Kahiau.

Help and hear the bands

My TV Jamms and Ready to Learn team up on Saturday to collect school supplies and cash donations for more than 25,000 underprivileged children.

Entertainers helping the cause are Imua, Ten Feet, Mana 'Ohana, BET, Nix Dance Studio, Kim Shimamoto and Hula Halau Na 'Ohana O Ke Anuenue, who will be performing 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ala Moana Center Stage. While the music plays, donations will be accepted at a drive-through, drop-off point on the center's Atkinson Street side, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Contributions also can be made at Ward Warehouse's Molokai Festival, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Stake your claim to fame

Seventeen magazine, Fox TV and NikeTown are searching nationwide for two teens to serve as trophy presenters at the 2000 Teen Choice Awards ceremony to be aired on Fox.

The "Claim to Fame" open casting call for youths between ages 12 and 20 will take place 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at NikeTown, King Kalakaua Plaza in Waikiki. Contestants should bring a blank VHS tape to the audition.

One male and one female will be selected to hold trophies and escort celebrity winners. They will get to attend a post-show party and receive a wardrobe of Nike gear for the evening.

Last year's winners, Jared Padalecki, 17, of San Antonio, and Patricia Pendelton, 17, of Connecticut, have since signed with talent and modeling agencies.

Volunteer to end violence

The Center to End Violence will be recruiting volunteers to provide information, education, support and advocacy to victims of domestic violence. Members will mentor in schools, assist the homeless, advocate for children and provide related services. Informational meetings take place:

Bullet Monday at 85-555 Farrington Highway, 7 to 8 p.m.
Bullet Wednesday at 545 Queen St., suite 100, 7 to 8 p.m.
Bullet Thursday at Windward Community College, Na'auao 146, 7 to 8 p.m.

Volunteers may become eligible for living allowances of up to $9,000, educational awards of up to $4,725, as well as health and childcare benefits.

Chopra heads for Big Isle

Acclaimed author, speaker and wellness expert Dr. Deepak Chopra will be on the Big Island Aug. 20 to 27 to speak during a weeklong yoga conference at The Orchid at Mauna Lani.

Room, seminar and meal package rates start at $2,995 for one and $4,990 for two. The cost for a week of seminars only is $1,200 per person. There is also a day rate of $250 per person for the seminars only. Seminars will run from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, except on the 27th, when sessions end at 10:30 a.m.

Chopra is slated to speak 1 p.m. Aug. 21 and 22, and at noon Aug. 23. (Subject to change.)

The conference is being coordinated by Bikram's Yoga College of India in Encino, Calif.
