Ties still bind
in London

EVERYONE loves "Small World" items. City Councilman John Henry Felix is no exception. He was at London'sMug shot Palladium Theatre last week to see Hawaii's Jason Scott Lee in the male lead role of "The King and I," when he ran into his Niu Valley neighbors Wally and Elaine Chung sitting just three rows away. If that weren't enough, compound it with the fact that the Chungs are the in-laws of Felix's senior council aide, Ron Boyer ... Lanai may be a tiny island, but lots of big things are happening there, not the least of which is David Murdock trying to take ownership of 98 percent of the island. Meanwhile, James Beard Award-winning chef Craig Shelton of the Ryland Inn in Whitehouse, N.J., was at the Lodge at Koele preparing two signature menus, and vocalist Perla Batalla attracted a standing room-only audience to hear her Mestiza melodies and rhythms. Both Shelton and Batalla were there as part of the 9-year old Lanai Visiting Artist Program ...

BACK in March, an item here announced the arrival of Daisy Hanalei Fielding, the newest concoction whipped up by Brew Moon brewmaster Brennan Fielding and his wife. Well, now Fielding has unveiled "Daisy's Hanalei Lager" on the Moon menu, which he modestly describes as a beautiful beer in honor of a beautiful little girl ...

The Davis report

ALSO in March, we mentioned the heart attack suffered by Rick Davis, former publisher of Aloha Magazine, whose life was saved by quick-thinking Queens personnel who used a defibrillator to literally shock him back into consciousness. He's now extolling the virtues of the machine for Pacific Rim Medical Systems and Medtronics Physio-Control, one of the nation's largest manufactures of the machine, which not only saved the life of Davis, but also H.P.D. chief Lee Donahue ... Meanwhile, ad man Pat Davis, who retired as president of Smith Davis Miyasaki a year ago, has been taken off chemotherapy. The doctor told him he's not in remission from cancer, but his PSA was low enough to try it out, and if it rises, back he goes. Davis had suffered a small stroke that knocked his right eye out of commission, which he says means the streets are probably safer now that he's temporarily unable to drive. Still maintains his sense of humor, however ...

AFTER hearing about attorney David Farmer's winning bid of a trip to Ireland on Ubid.com, I'm definitely going to check it out. He and wife Loren are just back from a trip via Delta to Ireland where they picked up a rent-a-car and drove through the lovely West of Ireland, spending eight nights in hotels -- one night at pricey Ashford Castle. Their winning bid including airfare for two, the rental car and the hotel package, booked by them using coupons, was $1,400. Where do I sign? ...

More bargain travel

THE company packaging tours to the Olympics in Sydney, Australia, was approached about sending the family of Hawaii boxer Brian Viloria to see him in action. They quoted a package for four totaling $40,000. Absurd, thought Viloria's friends. Canada 3000 stepped up with free plane tickets, a supporter's pal in Sydney found an apartment with cooking facilities within walking distance of the venue, and the $11,000 raised by the public should get them by nicely. The Waipahu Community Foundation, Sen. Cal Kawamoto and Charley Nishioka deserve special thanks ...
