Hawaii Select girls win
The Hawaii Select girls' basketball team won twice yesterday in its first action at the U.S. Junior Nationals in Las Vegas.Hawaii downed the Lakeland (Fla.) Chargers, 69-58, and the North Dallas All-Stars, 72-31.
Brandy Richardson scored 19 points in the first game, but did not play in the second due to a minor ankle sprain. Jodi Nakashima added 17 points for Hawaii Select against the Chargers.
Traci Torralva paced the team with 16 points in the second game.
HSJGA first-round leaders
Grant Yasui shot a 72 at the Links at Kuilima on the first day of the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association Callaway State Championship to lead the boys' 13-18 age group.Jordan Cox fired a 69 at the Turtle Bay Course to take the boys' 12-and-under lead.
Joan Shimozaki (13-17) and Sara Yamamoto (12-and-under) are the girls' leaders after the first day.
Players on both courses had to battle against wind gusts of 25-30 mph. The event concludes today.
Movers fall in Alaska
The Hawaii Island Movers dropped a 6-2 decision to the Anchorage Bucs in Alaska yesterday.Matt Abrams went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs as the Bucs scored five runs in the first two innings.
Movers' center fielder Brian Rooke rapped two hits and knocked in a run in the losing effort.
Chad Giannetti pitched a complete game for Hawaii, giving up 10 hits and striking out six.
The Movers play a doubleheader against the Bucs today.
Golf Day at Hapuna links
The public is invited to play the Hapuna Golf Course at the Big Island's Mauna Kea Resort for $45 as part of 2000 Hapuna Golf Day festivities on July 22.Beginning at 8:30 a.m. participants may visit vendor tents lining the driving range, register for hourly prizes including a round of golf, and chat with representatives of equipment manufacturers.

Free clubs on Big Island
Beginning golfers can borrow clubs before investing in a set on the Big Island.Hapuna head pro Ron Castillo Jr. secured equipment from companies, including Ping, Spalding and Wilson, to get the program started.
Golfers check out a set of clubs for a day or week at no charge. The clubs are at C&S Outfitters in Waimea, and can be checked out Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
