SHOPPING FANATIC
If you're not handy with a needle, this is what you need to know to understand how specialized Stitch 'N Things is: In a traditional craft shop, a single aisle might be devoted to needlework, and in that aisle, a few racks might be stocked with the books, kits and other supplies of the cross-stitcher. cross-stitchers fanciesStitch 'N Things, a small shop in Aiea, is 100 percent devoted to cross-stitching.
Owner Rose Sato said she has dabbled in many types of needlework, knitting and crochet, but it is cross-stitching that she does best, so she's never been tempted to expand her stock.
The shop has been in Newtown Square since 1985, and Sato started there as part-time help. She took over the store in 1991. The store draws customers islandwide, she says, as well as from neighbor islands. Tourists from the mainland find her in the yellow pages.
Because the store's so specialized, it stocks a greater variety of pattern books and accessories than regular craft shops. Here you'll find needles, rulers and linens, as well as trims, beads and finishing items such as frames.
You'll also find advice. Sato can help you in ways a part-time clerk in a discount store probably can't. She teaches classes, too, with a new round starting in September.
Sato brings passion to her business. Consider her annual Christmas routine: "On Christmas Day, after we finish opening the presents, I start on a new ornament. My goal is to finish one ornament every month, so when Christmas comes again I have 12 new ornaments for my tree."Stitch 'N Things is at 98-1247 Kaahumanu St., Suite 107, in Aiea. Hours: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays (except Wednesday, when the store closes at 8 p.m.) and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Call 487-0695.
