Kurisu makes cut
at U.S. Publinx

PORTLAND, Ore. - Jay Kurisu of Maui carded a 5-over 77 yesterday to finish at 150, tying for 28th place in the U.S. Men's Amateur Public Links Championship at the Heron Lakes.

Kurisu was eight strokes behind medalist D.J. Trahan of South Carolina. The top 64 golfers advanced to today's match play.

Failing to make the cut from Hawaii were Justin Kim of Honolulu (159); Hilo's Chris Igawa (162) and Cory Young (163); Guy Yamamoto of Waipahu (166); Kauai's 's Casey Watabu (166), and Raymond Tendo of Maui (172).

Castillo pro champion

Ron Castillo Jr. carded a 1-under 71 yesterday for a final-round 138 to win the Aloha Section PGA Club Professional Championship at the Poipu Bay Resort Golf Course on Kauai.

Castillo, a pro at the Hapuna Golf Course, finished two strokes ahead of Hilo Municipal's Kevin Hayashi (140).

Brian Sasada of Makena (141) was third and Kaluakoi's Scot Gileta (145) was fourth.

Spurgeon's debut sharp

Former University of Hawaii baseball player Jay Spurgeon was impressive in his Double-A debut with the Bowie Baysox of the Eastern League on Saturday.

Spurgeon fired a two-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over the Erie SeaWolves.

The right-hander pitched eight no-hit innings in his previous start for the Single-A Frederick Keys.

Movers lose on road

The Hawaii Island Movers fell to the Fairbanks Goldpanners, 13-5, in their Alaska League series finale yesterday.

Fairbanks took a 6-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back.

Third baseman Duke Sardinha drove in three runs to lead the Movers. Sardinha and Kainoa Obrey both had doubles in the game.

The Movers continue the season today at Anchorage.

Sonnenberg to defend

Eric Sonnenberg will defend his title as the Oahu Country Club Invitational starts tomorrow morning at the par-71 OCC golf course.

Also entered are former champions Brandan Kop (1998), Wendell Kop (1986 and 1989) and Ken Miyaoka. The field will include reigning Manoa Cup champion Randy Shibuya, finalist Norman-Ganin Asao, Parker McLachlin and Jonathan Ota.

The 54-hole tournament will continue Friday when the senior championship for players 55 to 64 and the super seniors begin their first round of play in separate 36-hole events.

After an off-day Saturday, the final round will start Sunday at 7 a.m.

Softball on Big Island

A men's double-elimination slow-pitch softball tournament will be held at Keaukaha Ball Park in Hilo this Friday through Sunday.

La Diana leads fleet

La Diana, a 35 foot sloop sailed doublehanded by Fred and Brendan Huffman, led after Monday's first day of the West Marine Pacific Cup, San Francisco-Kaneohe, yacht race.

The rest of the 77-boat fleet was to leave today.

Mirage was second in the doublehanded fleet. Hawaii entry Pali-Uli were last in the doublehanded class .

Leading Division A was Sprit, with Stephen Lewis as skipper. Alicante, with Pacific Cup veteran John Pauling at the helm, was leading Division B.

The first yacht is expected at Kaneohe Bay July 21.
