Handling grief
with humor

SOMEWHERE every day people must deal with grief, often over the loss of a loved one. One person who's well prepared to handleMug shot such a situation, even coming as surprisingly fast as it did, is Diana Wiley, who hosts a Saturday morning show on KHVH dealing with sex and aging well. She resumed her program about a month after the sudden death of her husband, Charlie Pietsch III, who collapsed with a heart attack during an aerobics class on the mainland. Her programs since her return have focused on coping with grief problems, and since she's found humor helpful in such situations, she's had comedian and "sex therapist" Kevin Hughes on as a repeat guest. She's an admirer of his shows at the Waikiki Terrace Hotel, which he calls "The Comedy of Love," and is determined to carry on and prove she's what her show is called, "50-plus and Fabulous" ...

THE tables will be turned on personnel at the Hilton Hawaiian village today through Saturday. "Clipped Wings," composed of United Airlines stewardess alumnae (before it became politically mandatory they be called "flight attendants") will be on the receiving end of "Coffee or tea?" by waiters and waitresses as they attend their national convention. But after putting up with the flying public all those years, many may opt for a martini. All current and former flight attendants are invited to the opening reception tonight at the Hale Koa Hotel's Luau Garden ...

Egypt is cool

ACADEMY of Arts volunteer Suzanne Fuller came across a half-dozen young girls (10-14) furiously taking notes during the "Tales of the Tomb" portion of the academy's "Mystery of the Nile" exhibit. Turns out these youngsters created a club nearly three years ago called the Twilight Cat Society to learn all about Egypt. (The cat was chosen because the Egyptians were nuts about them.) These half-dozen girls meet every other week to plan projects and learn more about Egypt. They've even taken to mummifying their Barbie Dolls and building a tomb for them, taking field trips (such as the one at the academy) and reading books. Drew Murakami, who'll be a 7th grader at Niu Valley next year, is secretary of the group and when asked why they started the club responded, "Egypt is cool." ...

THAT was Emme Tomimbang celebrating the third taping of her Saturday evening show on KGMB with special guests Na Leo Pilemehana, Chef Roy Yamaguchi and Master Sommelier Chuck Furuya. They dined at L'Uraku on Kapiolani ... Chef Yamaguchi, who has 17 restaurants throughout the United States and Japan, will soon meet his most grueling test when he opens his newest eatery in San Francisco. Critics there can be brutal and word of mouth is essential for success ...

Role playing

JUST wrapping up a two-week acting workshop here is Hollywood-based teacher Iris Klein. Both she and her mother studied with the legendary acting teacher Sanford Meisner and she uses his technique in her work. Iris has coached an eclectic group including Ann Heche, Meatloaf, Lucy Lawless, John Stamos and Josh Brolin. Taking her course locally are such thespians as Kristine Altweis, David Farmer, Bruce Hale, Jim Pallett and Liz Stone, among others. But they should be forewarned that the most dedicated Meisner student to reach these shores was Jack Lord ...
