Star-BulletinA 20-year-old man who installed security systems in some recently burglarized homes has been arrested in Saturday's gunpoint robbery in Manoa Valley.
The suspect was arrested at 6 p.m. yesterday at his Lekeona Street home in Keolu Hills. He was booked for first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary and two counts of kidnapping related to Saturday's break-in.
Burglary detectives and Crime Reduction Unit officers from the East Honolulu and Central Honolulu patrol districts, working with the robbery detail, discovered a connection between him and the alarms, sources said.
The suspect allegedly tripped the alarm system in one home and knew how to turn it off, the sources added.
Police believe he is responsible for 10 other Manoa Valley and Makiki burglaries since June 5. Saturday's break-in at the Oahu Avenue home, which has an alarm system, was the third during this period.
A firearm was displayed in at least three incidents, police said.
On July 4, an elderly woman was tied up and robbed in her Makiki home by an armed suspect.
Two days before Saturday's Manoa robbery, a resident of a nearby Hillside Avenue home was threatened with a gun after he caught a man trying to break in.
Police reportedly recovered a pellet gun at the suspect's residence.
In Saturday's case, the robber brazenly told one of the victims, "You ought to get a better security system," sources said.
The suspect was identified in a photo lineup yesterday by the two Oahu Avenue women, ages 53 and 24. Another witness also identified the suspect.
