Brush is being cleared along the Ewa side of Pali
Highway to clear a drainage ditch running
parallel to the highway.
It's been more than 10 years since the roadsides were last cleared out, says the DOT's Marilyn Kali. Since then, the hau trees that flank the highway have gotten aggressive, knocking over chain-link fences and crushing guard rails .
The project isn't just for looks. "Termites and other problems have caused trees alongside the road to fall apart, and rubbish and roots are choking the drainage system that runs parallel to the highway," said Kali.
You can see a kind of ditch that mirrors the highway route in the midst of the cleared area. This channel diverts water in flood conditions and prevents the road from being washed out, which used to occur with some frequency.According to Kali, the department will consult with the Outdoor Circle on replacement trees to beautify the mountain corridor. What kind of trees, Kali didn't know. Presumably something a little less rambunctious than hau.
