Free concerts give
taste of International
Jazz Festival

There ain't much that comes cheap or free today, but you can get a dose of jazz during five mini concerts this weekend and next, courtesy of the 7th annual Hawaii International Jazz Festival, a program of big band, swing, Dixieland, Latin and blues music.

The free concerts featuring Abe Weinstein & Friends are a preview for the big event taking place July 20 through 23 at Hawai'i Theatre.

Performances are:

Bullet Tomorrow -- At Starbucks Financial Plaza (corner of King and Bishop streets), 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with guest BB Shawn.

Bullet Saturday -- At Foodland Beretania, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.; also at Ward Village Shops, 5 to 7 p.m.

Bullet July 15 -- At Kahala Mall centerstage, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with guests BB Shawn and Pure Heart; also at Foodland Beretania, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Bullet A free kick-off celebration for the jazz fest will also take place 6 to 9 p.m. July 13 at Restaurant Row.

Tickets to the actual fest are $20, $31.50 and $36.50 per night.

Hula Halau K No'eau will dance in
"Huliau 2000" tomorrow and Saturday.



‘Huliau 2000’
at Hawaii Theatre

Kumu hula Michael Pili Pang and a cast of 18 dancers will perform in Halau Hula Ka No'eau's "Huliau 2000" Friday and Saturday at Hawai'i Theatre.

The annual dance concert was created as a platform for the halau to present traditional hula and new pieces. Pang, who studied under Ma'iki Aiu Lake, maintains the traditions of the dance while presenting new choreography and chants of his own.

Tickets are $20 and $25 at the theater box office, or charge by phone at 528-0506

Pang will also take "Huliau 2000" to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center 7:30 p.m. July 28. Tickets for the concert are $18 and $20 at the MACC box office or charge by phone at (808)-242-7469.
