Lanikai holds
off Outrigger for
Macfarlane title
Only four points separated the
top two canoe clubs in the
Fourth of July regattaRESULTS

Special to the Star-BulletinThe primary purpose of the traditional Independence Day canoe regatta is fun in the surf off Waikiki.
But the championship of the Walter J. Macfarlane Memorial Regatta -- the longest-running annual canoe race in the world -- is still prestigious and hotly pursued.
As the only surf race and highlight of the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association's summer season, yesterday's 58th Walter J. Macfarlane Regatta did not disappoint.
Sunny tradewind weather along with a slight bump in the surf made for ideal conditions all day, and a down-to-the-wire finish between crews from the eventual first and second-place clubs provided an exciting finale.
"This race is so much fun because there is some luck involved -- picking the lanes, having a good crew, steering, having the right waves,'' Lanikai Canoe Club coach Kalani Irvine said. "Its a good competition that anybody can win.
"The conditions were perfect out there, all the lanes had waves and different lanes were turning up winners. It's always one of your goals each year to win the Macfarlane Regatta."
With one event to go, Lanikai held a tight, but insurmountable six-point lead over host Outrigger Canoe Club.
During the final race -- the men's 35-and-over -- one of the biggest set of waves of the day hit. Both Lanikai's and Outrigger's crews were able to catch the same wave shortly after the -mile turn, riding all the way to the finish line and leaving the rest of pack well behind.Outrigger's crew rode the wave just a little longer than Lanikai's, and ended up with a victory by less than half a second.
Lanikai, however, earned the overall title with 71 points to Outrigger's 67.
"We were on the same wave, but there is a section that bowls a little bit at the end of every wave," Irvine said. "We knew that whoever was able to catch the most of the little bowl would win it and Outrigger was able to do that."
While Lanikai again received dominant performances from their men's crews, Outrigger finished with its best overall result of the season so far, due in large part to big performances by its women's crews.
Outrigger won the prestigious women's senior race, and also finished in the top spot in the women's freshmen and 35-and-over divisions.
"We're very excited with our finish," Outrigger head coach Kehau Kali said. "Today was really good because we had a little surf and we're really grateful to be able to hold our regatta at this site."
Hui Lanakila, which resided at or near the top spot in the standings all day, finished in third with 57 points. Healani won the A Division for smaller clubs with 28 points.
OHCRA has a bye this weekend. The next event is July 16 at Keehi Lagoon.
