The Honolulu Fire Department's 83rd recruit class
trains at Chevron Hawaii's petroleum fire-training
area, one of only two such training sites in the state.
Above, behind a shield of water, a team moves
in toward a fuel valve.
A slight shift in the wind, and the training area
is covered in the darkness of thick smoke, below .
The recruits keep moving until they are close
enough to shut off the valve.
