Kapiolani fund-raisers on TV, radio set record
The 18th annual Kapiolani Children's Miracle Network telecast and Radiothon for Kids raised a record $615,965 to benefit children's services at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.Every dollar raised remains in Hawaii and helps to provide direct patient services, medical equipment, health education and research.
The June 4 telethon was broadcast live from KITV-4 studios with live feeds from Kapiolani Medical Center.
The first-ever Radiothon for Kids, held on radio station Hawaiian 105 KINE June 1-3, brought in $52,748.
Donations can still be made to Kapiolani Health Foundation, 55 Merchant St., 26th Floor, Honolulu 96813.
The medical center is the only one in the region specializing in maternity and infant care.
21 Big Island stores caught in liquor sting
HILO -- Police have issued citations to 21 East Hawaii retailers for selling tobacco to minors following a sting operation.Using young people from the state Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division and the University of Hawaii Cancer Research Center posing as buyers, the operation was conducted Saturday at 67 outlets in Hamakua, Hilo and Puna, police said.
The 21 violators are subject to a fine of $500 for a first offense and up to $2,000 for subsequent offenses.
The law also requires retailers to display signs saying tobacco cannot be sold to people under 18, but citations were issued only to retailers who made such sales, police said.

Rapper, 26, arrested in attack on heckler
A 26-year-old performer was arrested for attacking an audience member at Aloha Tower yesterday, police said.The suspect, 26, was a rapper on a cruise ship and punched a man, 34, who was heckling him during the performance, police said.
The alleged attack took place when the ship docked at Aloha Tower.
Woman, 83, robbed at home in Makiki
Police are searching for a man who robbed an 83-year-old woman at her Makiki home yesterday.The woman answered a knock at her door at 1:30 p.m. and was confronted by the suspect, who asked for directions, police said. The suspect took out a handgun and forced his way into the house, police said.
The suspect is described as 18 to 30 years old with short dark hair and a medium complexion.
Bystanders catch suspect in liquor store robbery
Bystanders chased down and caught a 46-year-old man who allegedly robbed an Ala Moana liquor store last night.The suspect robbed the Lucky 7 Liquor Store on Atkinson Street and ran away at 6:52 p.m., police said. Bystanders saw him run away, caught him and held him for police.
Masked man robs Liliha branch of First Hawaiian
Police are searching for a masked man who robbed the Liliha branch of First Hawaiian Bank today.The suspect, who was wearing a white mask, entered the bank at 1420 Liliha St. at about 9:10 a.m. and uttered he had "dynamite," police said. He then fled with an undisclosed amount of money.
Man drowns while fishing south of Hilo
HILO -- A man drowned while fishing at the shore of Paradise Park subdivision south of Hilo last night, the Fire Department said.Fire rescue personnel responding to an 8:24 p.m. call learned that the victim fell from a low, rocky cliff which runs along the shore. His body was retrieved by a county helicopter 80 yards offshore.
The victim's identity was not released.
