Garcia opens
with victory

Hawaii's Sunny Garcia charged to a victory in his first-round heat of the Billabong MSF Pro surf contest at Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa, yesterday.

Garcia is the Association of Surfing Professionals' World Championship Tour ratings leader.

Hawaii's Shane Dorian, Ross Williams and Kalani Robb also won their first-round heats and will move to round three along with Garcia. Shawn Sutton, Andy Irons and Conan Hayes, also of Hawaii, advanced to round two.

In the women's Billabong MSF Pro, Hawaii's Keala Kennelly was eliminated in a round-two loss to Tita Tavares.

Kotaka, Au AAU karate champs

Men's kumite champion George Kotaka also won the Grand Champion Award and Elisa Au captured the women's open division title, leading the International Karate Federation-Hawaii team in the AAU National Championships at Richmond, Va.

Twenty-one IKF-Hawaii martial artists accounted for 95 medals, 72 of them gold, in the nationals, which wound up Saturday.

Movers split at Anchorage

The Hawaii Island Movers split their first two Alaska Summer Baseball League road games of the season, beating the Anchorage Bucs, 6-1, Saturday on a complete-game eight-hitter by Chad Giannetti but bowing, 6-5, yesterday.

In yesterday's game, Hawaii tied the score at 5-5 with a four-run rally in the top of the ninth inning, only to surrender the tie-breaker in the bottom half.
