Charity draws
strong support

HERE'S an uplifting item about the River of Life Mission. Two United Airlines baggage handlers, who apparently can't Mug shotget enough of lifting large items, are banding together with a very fit tax consultant to stage a competition to raise money for the mission. Taxman Elton Kinoshita and baggage handlers Dean Yamada and Sid Somera will hold a "Lifting for the Mission" competition open to men, women and children. Entry fees from the Saturday event at the Kahala Mall Center Stage will go to help fund programs of the River of Life. The day-long competition ends at 4 p.m. with entertainment, appropriately enough, by a country group called the Geezers ...

EVEN though she was wearing a "No Fly Zone" T-shirt, the recently divorced Daynin Allosada Dashevsky wasn't warding off would-be suitors. Instead she was plugging the product she's now selling, which can be used to chase flies off a table, particularly one that's outside. It moves around in a circle with ti-leaves shooing the flies away. Daynin, who was married until recently to newscaster Howard Dashevsky, has a sister named Bonet who's been singing for a couple of years in the lobby bar at the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco and has only just moved to the Ritz in Hong Kong ...

Wayne's World

HOKU'S exec chef Wayne Hirabayashi has a lot to smile about these days. The TV Food Network filmed him preparing an innovative Hawaiian feast for Sam Aiona a few months back, and it'll air 20 times this month. In addition, Hoku's was named "Best Restaurant in Honolulu" by Food & Wine Magazine in the July 2000 issue. More than 100 food and wine experts chose the "best of" lists in 16 major American cities. And if that's not enough, Hirabayashi, if he doesn't stand alone, is certainly in select company as local-born exec chef of a "Five-Diamond" resort property ...

THE word Halekulani means "house befitting heaven," and there were a couple of stellar bodies on view there over the weekend. These would be body-builders Arnold Schwarzenegger and Franco Columbu. And Arnold left a note for hotel staffers which has to be his personalized form of "aloha." He wrote, "Thanks for the great stay. I'll be back." ... Localite Robin Schaefer finished seventh in the Ms. Fitness Universe Pageant in New York City. It doesn't sound like all that much until you realize there were more than 40 participants worldwide. You can see Robin in ads for The Gym ...

STARTING this Friday, Castagnola's Restaurant in the Niu Valley Shopping Center will be featuring musical entertainment by guitarist/vocalist Tony Chardo, whose slogan is "Singer of 1001 Requests." He'll be performing there Fridays and Saturdays ...

Pride of Lions

HE was in town to attend the Lions convention, but Bob Heft had other things on his mind than cruising Waikiki. Heft, the man who designed the 50-star version of the American flag, is an active volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in his home state of Michigan. He made it a point to check out local Habitat projects. The first one was on Pele Street where he met first lady Vicky Cayetano pounding nails, and then last weekend he joined in to work on a home that Habitat is building for Kuulani Reynolds and her mother in Waimanalo. Habitat for Humanity, you may recall, is the program in which ex-President Jimmy Carter volunteers ...
