Glacier Pilots pepper
Hawaii Island Movers

The Anchorage Glacier Pilots built an 8-0 lead and cruised to a 10-2 victory over the Hawaii Island Movers in an Alaska Baseball League game at Rainbow Stadium last night.

Adam Swann (Georgia) was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and Doug Bernier (Cuesta JC) had two hits and two RBIs for the visitors.

Ben Quick (Purdue) pitched the first six innings for Anchorage, allowing three hits and two unearned runs. He walked one and struck out seven.

Brian Rooke (Hawaii-Hilo) had two of the five Movers' hits.

The teams resume their series with a doubleheader tomorrow at 4 at Rainbow Stadium.

Ting, Umemura get byes

Desiree Ting and Anna Umemura shared co-medalist honors in yesterday's qualifying for the Hawaii State Women's Match Play Championship and drew first-round byes.

Both posted 6-over-par 79s as first-round play began today at the Oahu Country Club.

Traci Ayabe, who lost to Mahina Ah Yuen in last year's final, was among the other 12 qualifiers, along with three-time former champion Bev Kim.

The quarterfinals will be played tomorrow, the semifinals Thursday and the 18-hole championship match Friday morning.

Hawaii spikers fare well

The Outrigger Canoe Club 17-under boys' volleyball team finished 13th and Team HIC's boys' 14-under team was fifth in the Mikasa Boys' Volleyball Classic that finished Sunday in Irvine, Calif.

Outrigger, competing in the 18-under division, went 5-1 in pool play. The team advanced to Sunday's top 16 and dropped a pair of matches to Missouri Thunder 18s and Saddleback (Calif.) 18s to finish 13th among 53 teams.

Team HIC was fifth out of 21 teams in its division.

Vulcans sign pair

Trisha Holley, a junior college All-American outfielder from Sierra (Calif.) College, and Leilehua High catcher Kayla Kahuli have signed to play softball for the University of Hawaii-Hilo.

Holley batted .409 for Sierra, which went 35-15 during her two seasons. Kahuli was an all-state selection for the Mules.

Basketball officials clinic
