Just past the midway point of the Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a short course season, the paddlers of Lokahi Canoe Club appear to be hitting their stride and regaining some of the swagger that propelled the club to 12 straight association championships prior to last season.

Lokahi dealt the rest of the competition its second consecutive double-digit loss by winning the Windward Kai Canoe Club's 27th Annual Regatta by 12 points yesterday at Keehi Lagoon.

Lokahi won the previous Sunday's regatta at Haleiwa Beach by 15 points. The first three regattas of the season had been decided by two points or less.

Kaneohe Canoe Club finished in second at Haleiwa Beach and the club again came in second yesterday, finishing with 57 points to Lokahi's 69. The victory in the association's fifth regatta of the season now pushes Lokahi out in front with three regatta titles to Kaneohe's two.

After careless errors and subsequent penalties cost Lokahi the two previous regattas held at Keehi this season-both Kaneohe victories-the club performed relatively mistake-free at the site yesterday.

"The last couple of weeks we've been doing a lot better in terms of not making mistakes," Lokahi head coach Wayne Babineau said. "All the clubs try real hard not to make mistakes, and if you look at the performances from the beginning of the season until now, I think everybody is making less mistakes."

Lokahi received a tremendous jump on their eventual victory yesterday by racking up some big points during the youth races. Typically Kaneohe's strong suit, Lokahi's youth got the winning started with first-place finishes in both the girls' and boys' 12-and-under divisions. Rounding out the youth races, Lokahi also finished the boys' 18-and-under race in the winner' s circle.

After the youth and novice races, Lokahi held a 32-31 lead over Kaneohe, and Lokahi's strong adult crews then seized control of the regatta.

"It was surprising and really nice (to have the early lead)," Babineau said.

"Our kids have been getting stronger and getting better, and they did really well for us."

After being handily beaten the last two weekends, Kaneohe head coach Woody Kahiapo was visibly disappointed, yet he remained optimistic with three more "regular" season regattas and the association and state championships still ahead.

"Right now we have to go back to the drawing board and remember to take the season one race at a time," Kahiapo said. "We have to work hard in practice this week and hopefully regroup for next weekend."

Koa Kai Canoe Club won the A Division for smaller clubs with 31 points. The Hui Wa'a season continues next weekend with a regatta at Maili Beach.
