The Hawaii All-Stars softball team captured the Cheyenne Mountain Invitational's 18-and-under division at Colorado Springs yesterday. All-Stars conquer tourney
The team went 6-0 in the two-day tournament.
In the championship game, Hawaii stopped the Colorado Cardinals 13-0 on Shannon Tabion's one-hitter.
Tabion also went 3-for-3 at the plate, and teammate Cindy Higa hit a grand slam.
Tabion was also named the tournament MVP, pitching three of the team's six victories. Hawaii's Jerri Abrero also had three pitching wins.
The team moves on to play in the Fireworks Invitational in Aurora, Colo. starting Wednesday.
Gamble to Olympic trials
Robert Gamble of Mililani will be competing in this week's U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta.Gamble qualified in the 50-meter free pistol and 10-meter air pistol at last month's trials at Fort Benning, Ga.
Gamble is competing for one of two spots on the U.S. team that will go to the Sydney Olympics. The trials run today through July 2.
Hawaii takes gold
Team Hawaii won 10 medals, including seven gold, one silver and two bronze, in the U.S. Transplant Games at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.Sean Hively, the youngest athlete on the team, won three medals by placing first in the 1500-meter racewalk and the 800 run, and third in the 1500 run.
Sandy Webster and Avelina Barsatan-Lorica won singles and doubles tennis competitions.
Jill Bartow, a past gold medal winner for Team Hawaii, earned a victory in the long jump.
In addition, team captain Martin Hee won a silver medal in the softball throw and Alfrey Pacada won a bronze in the 1500 racewalk.
The team of 10 athletes along with 18 friends and family members and 10 donor families returned to Hawaii last night.
