Rep. Abercrombie
co-sponsors bill to
end estate tax

Hawaii U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, rated as one of the nation's most liberal Democrats, has come out in favor of repealing the federal estate tax to help small businesses.

Abercrombie said small business owners often must liquidate and close up when heirs are hit with "a huge tax bill."

Abercrombie is co-sponsoring the legislation with Republican U.S. Rep. Jennifer Dunn of Washington.

VOTERS' LANGUAGE:

Hawaii's Reform Party will hold voter registration for Chinese-, Korean- and Samoan-speaking residents of Puahala Homes. The first session starts at 6:30 p.m. today at Hale Poai, 1001 N. School St., says John Jackson, party chairman.

Jackson said interpreters will be available.

On Friday the party will offer help to Korean speakers.

Help will be available to Samoan speakers at 6:30 p.m. on July 6.

"Many people who are legally entitled to vote and be part of the political process don't because of language barriers," said Jackson, who is also a state Senate candidate.

QUITTING BOARD:

Board of Education member Marilee Lyons says she will resign from her Central Oahu seat to run for the state House.

Lyons has pulled election papers and said she intends to file to run for the North Shore seat left vacant by Democratic Rep. Alex Santiago, who has decided not to seek re-election.

Lyons has two more years remaining on a four-year term with the board. She said she will resign after the July 20 Board of Education meeting.
