Police try to ID body burned in Kohala fire

NORTH KOHALA, Hawaii -- Police are continuing attempts to confirm the identity of a body found badly burned in a fire that engulfed a converted garage yesterday.

A 49-year-old man who rented a home next door told police he had allowed a homeless woman to stay in the structure. Fire Department officials described it as a shack the size of a two-car garage.

The woman was last seen a half-hour after midnight, police said. About 5 a.m., the man next door heard a loud explosion and saw flames shooting from the blown-out windows of the converted garage, police said.

The man called 911, then tried to put out the fire with a garden hose, suffering burns on his face and arms.

Big Isle Council votes against trash security

HILO -- To guard the trash or to recycle the trash, that was the question.

Looking over Mayor Stephen Yamashiro's $175.8 million budget for the coming fiscal year, the Hawaii County Council decided $100,000 could be removed from security at four transfer stations and applied to recycling instead.

Yamashiro vetoed the budget change, saying state law requires guards to keep hazardous materials out of dumps. The Council this week overrode his veto, 8-1.

Yamashiro said he expects the public will be upset to learn that less money means shorter hours at transfer stations.

When the public raises a "hue and cry," they should remember that the Council made the policy decision, he said.
