Mayoral menagerie

SOME folks think of Honolulu Hale as a kind of "Animal House," but it might fit the personal residence of Mayor Jeremy Harris better. He's just added to its list of creatures, albeit a small addition. Last week was Ramona Harris' birthday, and when she dropped by City Hall to Mug shotpick up her husband he emerged with her present -- a three-pound Maltese named "Bear" who was wearing a child's lei. Bear will go just fine with the Harris' other dog, a 75-pound Golden Retriever named "Pumpkin," not to mention their cockatiel, "Kramer," and a bunny named "Dunkin." This should make for some menagerie during the annual Mayor's Walk ...

WHICH brings us to the "Beastmaster," Marc Singer. He was the one who caused something of a commotion among female staffers and customers when he dropped by Kaimuki Library to apply for a visitor's library card. Recognized by library assistants Randy Sotsuda and Carole Endo, the star of the "Beastmaster" films signed autographs for them before setting out in search of books ...

KHPR staffer Judy Neale found it difficult to leave a message while laughing, but when she called the residence of a family named Wong, she got a message machine that began, "This is the Wong number." ...

Above par

THREE separate golf tournaments were on TV yesterday, and all had a local angle. Lee Trevino, winning the Senior PGA event, said, "I gotta go back to Hawaii now -- Claudia's gonna love that. Mastercard, here I come." ... Winner of the PGA event was Notah Begay, who gave great credit to his brother and caddy, Clint Begay, who's on the UH-Hilo golf team ... When the commentator wondered if Julie Inkster would do the little dance she does on commercials should she win, it took me back to Princeville many years ago when a calm Inkster danced the night away to the Beach Boys performing, "Don't Worry, Baby." I remarked that she looked like she had no worries, and sure enough, won that Kemper Open ... Losing in yesterday's playoff to Inkster was a golfer new to me, Stefania Croce of Italy, a model-like creature who may become golf's answer to tennis' Anna Kournikova. She made the cover of Sports Illustrated even though she's never won a pro tournament. Croce looks like a winner, but so far that's it ...

LATE SHOW host David Letterman, knocking the CBS "Survivor" show for what he considers its phoniness, insists the people staying on an island have plenty of real food to eat and not only that, "Every Tuesday Don Ho drops by." ... Channel 8 reporter Diane Ako was stationed in a downtown location doing a remote when the super came on, reading "KAKA'AKO." ... There was a full house at Murphy's last week, a fund-raiser for Sheila Sanford, widow of Sam Sanford, who was pictured in my very first column. Though battling cancer, Sheila showed up with smiles and kisses all around. The most generous man in town, Don Murphy, contributed all the food ...

Progress?

LAST year at the King Kamehameha Hula Competition, the results were tabulated by hand, and about 15 minutes went by before the results were announced. This "Hawaiian time" simply wouldn't do for some of those involved, so this year a computer was used to help compile the results. You guessed it -- it was over 45 minutes before results were announced and trophies handed out ...
