Bullet Latiana Espinueva, a 9-year-old student at Hahaione Elmentary School, was crowned Junior Miss Vogue International in a pageant held at Mamiya Theatre. Espinueva also was awarded the People's Choice Award during the pageant.

Bullet Regional winners from Hawaii of GEICO's 13th annual National Seat Belt Poster Contest for ages 6-11 are: Corina Sampaia from E.B. de Silva School in Hilo, first; and Maricel Delos Santos from Pahala Elementary School, third. For age group 12-15, first prize went to Glenda Duldulao from Kalakaua Middle School; second place to Nancy Shon from Stevenson Middle School; and third to Angelo Kho from Kalakaua Middle School.

Bullet Hina Mauka Recovery Center recognized the following people at its Annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony: Andrew Autele, Christian Benkman, Brian Burnet, Colleen Fox, Doug Hall, Chiyeko Harada, Tyler Harr, Sara Hill, Wendy Klimpl, Erin Law, Rocky Like, Tricia Matsukado, Todd Obata, Mary O'Hanlon, Mike O'Neil, Christie Pacheco, Malia Reeves, Patricia Rickman, Denny Schnaible, Jan Takahashi, Bill Tapper, Melissa Torres, Darlene Vysoky and Diane Walden.

Bullet Dr. Lorraine Mito, assistant department chair of education programs and faculty member at the Hawaii Campus of the University of Phoenix, was chosen to participate in the Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program to Japan.

Bullet The U.S. Small Business Administration awarded the Pacific Division's Regional Officer in Charge of Contracts at Pearl Harbor an award for small-business contracting efforts.

Bullet GEICO awarded Sgt. Laura R.K. Jernigan of the 25th Military Police Battalion, Schofield Army Barracks, a Military Service Award for her achievements in drug and alcohol prevention.

Bullet Punahou School selected Jonathan Yorck to be one of the fellows to participate in the 2000 Korean Studies Program in New York.

Bullet Joan Yoshina, the librarian at Mililani Mauka Elementary School, received the Golden Key Award from the Hawaii Association of School Librarians.

Bullet Stanley Young received the 1999 Outstanding Vending Program Rehabilitant of the Year award from Ho'opono (Services of the Blind Branch of the Department of Human Services) and the Outstanding Blind Person of the Year award from the Lions Club of Honolulu.

Bullet Spa Management Magazine awarded JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa at Ko Olina the 1999 Jeffrey Joseph Spa of the Year Award.

Bullet Rand T.K. Lono, a freshman at Kamehameha Schools and son of Rory and Nora Lono, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

Bullet Owen M. Sonoda, son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick T. Sonoda and a member of Troop 49, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

Grants and Donations

Bullet The Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children received a $10,000 grant from the Alexander & Baldwin Foundation to be used in the ongoing operations of the hospital's Maui Children's Specialty Clinic.

Bullet Liberty House and M.A.C. (Make-Up Art Cosmetics) gave $10,000 to the Olakino Wellness Program and $26,000 to Malama Pono to assist the organizations in their fight against AIDS.

Bullet Alfred's at Century Center, Daily Scoop, Murphy's Bar & Grill, North Shore Country Okazu and Bento, Swiss Inn and 3660 on the Rise raised over $1,700 for The Sex Abuse Treatment Center's prevention education program.

Bullet Alan Nakagawa, a teacher at Honokaa High and Intermediate School, received a $10,000 TAPESTRY grant from Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. for his idea to engage students in the learning of scientific concepts through processes in the arts.

Bullet Longs Drugs raised $25,000 for the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific from their golf tournament. The hospital will use the funds to buy a vehicle for a home visitation program.

Bullet The Beta Beta Gama Charitable Fund of Hawaii Community Foundation awarded a $1,500 grant to the American Cancer Society to help support the Hanohano Hukilau program which is Hawaii's version of the national Tell-A-Friend Breast Cancer Program.

Bullet Liberty House donated $20,000 to the Hawaii Children's Discovery Center. The funds were collected from the "What Aloha Means to Me" Aloha Calendar 2000 contest and calendar sale.

Bullet The Someone Special Foundation received a grant of $5,000 from the McInerny Foundation.

Bullet Bank of Hawaii employees raised $95,000 for the American Cancer Society at the 7th Annual Statewide Relay for Life 2000. Bank of Hawaii added $10,000 to the employees' contribution giving the American Cancer Society $105,000 total.

Bullet McInerny Foundation gave $4,025 to Catholic Charities' Community Relations Department to help purchase multimedia equipment.

Bullet Hawaiian Electric Industries Charitable Foundation continued its sponsorship of a statewide Comprehensive School Health Education program by granting $15,000 to the American Cancer Society.

Bullet The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation donated a Charity Partnership grant of $250,000 to the Friends of Hawaii Charities.

Bullet Six Hawaii Preparatory Academy juniors were named to the list of National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. They are: Oriana Bleecher, Marisa Ganir, Jesse Melrose and Chloe Ota, all from Waimea; Katherine Harrington of Los Altos, Calif.; and Leonard Hyman of Pago Pago, American Samoa.

Bullet The Windward Branch of the American Association of University Women awarded scholarships to: Shin Houy Ho of Kahuku High School, who will study International Business Marketing at UH-Manoa; Leigh Kido of Kahuku High School, who will study Business Administration at UH-Manoa; Pauahi K. Nahoi of Honolulu Community College, who continues her study in Occupational and Environmental Safety Management; Ginger Royal of Windward Community College, who will study art at WCC and UH-Manoa; Elise L. Talbert of Castle High School, who will study genetics at the University of California-Davis; and Pamela Wallace, who will continue her Special Education studies at UH-Manoa after completing her undergraduate degree at Honolulu Community College.
