Four boxers advance
to semifinals

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Four Hawaii boxers gained the semifinals of the 2000 Junior Olympic National Championships with victories yesterday.

Brian Battease of Mililani scored a unanimous decision over Mitchell Gillespie of Jackson, Tenn., in their 119-pound bout, while Waianae's Glenn Miyose and Walter Salas advanced as the referee stopped their respective bouts in the second round.

Miyose beat Jordan Bauman of Chester, S.D., in the 125-pound division, while Salas took out Pablo Pena of Edinburg, Texas, in the 147-pound division.

Ronald Cordeiro, also of Waianae, decisioned Travante Anderson of Jackson, Tenn., to move on in the 106-pound class.

Glenn Dunnings of Honolulu and Leroy Rosario of Waianae were eliminated.

Bragado advances

Hawaii's Danalee Bragado and teammate Ali Wood won both of their qualifying matches yesterday at the Swiss Open women's beach doubles volleyball tournament in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Bragado-Wood, seeded 15th in the qualifier, defeated Katarine Mizdosova and Katarina Rimovska of the Slovak Republic, 15-6, and second-seeded Yukiko Ishizaka and Rii Seike of Japan, 15-9. Bragado-Wood faced the 10th-seeded team of Mayra Huerta-Laura Almaral of Mexico today.

If both Bragado-Wood and the team of Misty May and Holly McPeak win today, they will have a playoff to determine the U.S.'s fourth entry into the 32-team main draw.

Best of the West back

The eighth Best of the West baseball tournament, featuring three teams from Hawaii and three teams from the mainland, will be held Monday through July 1 at Ala Wai Field and Aloha Stadium.

Top high school and college players representing West, Central and Leeward Oahu will vie for the title, along with Yosemite (Calif.), the Dallas Titans and Chillicothe (Ohio) Generals.

Games are scheduled for 9 a.m. June 26-28 at Ala Wai and from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. June 26-30 at Aloha Stadium.

The championship is set for 12:30 p.m. at the stadium.

There is no admission charge.

The event was not held last year due to the resurfacing of the stadium field.

Basketball in Paradise

Thirty-one 18-and-under teams will compete in the Basketball in Paradise Tournaments, June 28-July 1.

The eight-team boys' division, which includes four entries from Hawaii, will be held at Iolani. Competing are Iolani, Kamehameha, Mid-Pacific and Maryknoll, along with teams from Missouri, Kansas and two from Oklahoma.

Thirteen teams from Hawaii and 10 from the mainland will vie for the girls' title. Play will be at Leilehua, Campbell, Radford and Kalaheo.

Among the Hawaii teams entered are Hawaii Select, Maui All-Stars and Kalakaua. The mainland teams are from Kansas, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota and Oklahoma.

The event is sponsored by the HWB Foundation, a non-profit arm of Hawaii Winter Baseball.

Admission will vary by site.
