Big Island man, 71, held in shooting death
KAILUA-KONA -- Police are holding a 71-year-old man for the shooting death of a 41-year-old victim in the Kailua Industrial Area Saturday, authorities said.The suspect, Jesus Reyes Jr. of Kailua-Kona, turned himself in to the police at 12:23 p.m. Saturday following the 11:44 a.m. shooting.
The shooting took place at Pacific Waste Inc., police said.
Reyes was charged with murder, use of a firearm in a felony and having a firearm in an illegal place.
He is being held in lieu of $175,000.
The victim was identified as Kenneth Kaniho Jr. of Kailua-Kona.
An autopsy showed he died of multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
Police gave no motive for the shooting and had no comment on a report that the victim owed Reyes a large sum of money.
Four families left homeless by blaze
The Hawaii chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting four families left homeless by a housing fire yesterday at Hickam Air Force Base.The fire at 2333 Gemini in Onizuka Village was reported at 3:40 p.m.
No one was injured.

Taiwan family takes ashes of woman home
Family members from Taiwan have returned home with the ashes of Ming Fang Lee, whose badly decomposed body was recovered in waters off Bellows Air Force Station on May 23.The medical examiner's office determined identity based on the Lee's bathing suit, height and weight, and dental comparison.
The body was turned over to Borthwick Mortuary on June 8 and cremated the following day.
Family members took Lee's ashes home on June 11.
Lee disappeared May 15 after going to a beach in Lanikai.
No foul play is suspected in her death, police said.
Storm warning buoy will be reset in place
A buoy used to detect approaching storms will be reset tomorrow about 290 miles south of Honolulu.Fishermen reported the buoy missing April 24, and a Coast Guard airplane located the wayward buoy 184 miles west-northwest of its charted position.
A Coast Guard cutter retrieved it on its way to Honolulu.

Man, 33, rushes to help two nieces, drowns
A 33-year-old man drowned yesterday while trying to assist his two teen-age nieces who were struggling in waters near Swanzy Beach Park.The victim and his extended family were gathered at a residence at 51-457 Kamehameha Highway for Father's Day weekend when people onshore noticed the two teen-age kayakers were in trouble.
One of the kayaks had overturned.
Some members of the group entered the water and brought the girls safely to shore, but in the meantime, the victim's kayak overturned and was found empty onshore, said fire Capt. Richard Soo.
Firefighters were called at 10 a.m.
The fire department helicopter located the man's body about 100 yards offshore at 3:50 p.m.
N. Kohala two-car crash claims third victim
HAWI, Hawaii -- A third person has died following a two-car accident in North Kohala June 12, police said. The latest victim is Dr. Barton Eveleth, 87, of Hawi, who died yesterday at North Hawaii Community Hospital.Eveleth was a passenger in a car driven by Emily Stark, 90, of Hawi, which was hit on Akoni Pule Highway by a car driven by Clifford Ignacio, 52, of Kawaihae.
Both died soon after the accident.
Despondent man causes 4 wrecks, is hospitalized
A despondent 20-year-old Aiea man caused four accidents about 9:30 p.m. Saturday while traveling eastbound on Moanalua Road and Moanalua Freeway before another accident disabled his car, police said.While there were no major injuries reported by any of the accident victims, the driver was transported to the hospital in critical condition with self-inflicted stab wounds.
The driver's family said he was agitated when he left his house.
The case has been classified as criminal property damage in the fourth degree.
'Ice' chemicals found at home of burn victim
Police Narcotics/Vice Division officers are checking into chemicals associated with crystal methamphetamine found at the Waikapoki Road home of a Kaneohe man who suffered burns on his face, arms and legs yesterday.Lt. Michael Moses confirmed that chemicals have been submitted for analysis.
The man went to the Kaneohe Fire Station seeking medical assistance. He told firefighters he had enclosed containers of flammable acetone and toluene in his car. The man was in stable condition at Straub Hospital with first- and second-degree burns over 36 percent of his body.
