The Chaine des Rotisseurs, founded in France in 1248, is made up of people who love to eat, drink and make merry and they did that for four days here last week to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Chaine in America. Chaine diners
celebrate hereMembers of the international group pigged out at a luau at Lanikohunua, dined at the Kahala Mandarin and the Royal Hawaiian, and wound up with a black-tie gala for 300 people last Saturday at the Hilton. Before Saturday's dinner, Burton Hobson, in perfect French, inducted 12 people into the Chaine, including Al Tomonari, KITV's Pamela Young, and Norm and Ramsay Goldstein. Cheryl Apo and Larry Vogel were named to higher positions. Mauna Kea's Adi Kohler received an award for years of superior service. Bob Lee and Fred Honda were overall coordinators. Carole Brooks coordinated the gala and worked on video production with Tim Barton, Kristin Zambucka and Dan Churma. Music was by Clyde Pound's Unison with singers Jan Brenner and Alwyn Erub and musicians Bryan Kessler and Todd Smith. Chefs Guido Ulmann, Alan Wong, Roy Yamaguchi, George Mavrothalassitis, Philippe Padovani and Yasuzo Ueda, and pastry chefs Andre Fusero and Franz Schaier prepared the feast. Wong says lock up the ego
It's remarkable so many famous chefs can work together in the same kitchen. "Just put the ego aside," Wong said. "Lock it up and try to do the best job possible." Wong offers a spread of his specialties at his Pineapple Room Sunday Brunch at Liberty House, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Guests are welcome to combine both the table service and go through through the buffet line as well for $29.50. Besides Wong's delicious offerings, the Pua Melia Trio -- Pudgie Young, Anna Cazimero and Lavy Del Toro -- sings isle favorites ...Woody Allen's "Small Time Crooks" is big time entertainment. Tracey Ullman, Hugh Grant, Elaine May and Allen lead the way in the hilarious romp about a bungling bunch of ex-cons who plan to rob a bank. Ullman is great. Grant, playing a suave art dealer, isn't one of the would-be bank robbers but he's not exactly the guy you'd want to marry your daughter, either. The wisecracks in this one just keep coming ... Black Tie and Blue Jeans, a Heart Association benefit for Hawaii, is next Saturday at the Sheraton Waikiki. The Paradise Sisters with Twist and Shout and Rubber Soul entertain. Bulletin champs crowned
The Star-Bulletin Golf and Tennis tourneys took place last weekend at the Hawaii Prince Golf Club. John Agoo, husband of reporter Debra Barayuga, was tops in golf. Tops for women was Tessie Seabolt. Randy Cadiente was chairman and astute handicapper. The doubles team of photographer Ken Ige and his dad, Ralph, were tennis winners ... Prince Resorts golfers are looking good. Randy Shibuya of the Oahu Prince won the Manoa Cup last weekend at Oahu Country Club. Westin Maui Prince's Brian Sasada won the recent Maui Open ...
