Sprechen zie Deutsch?

SEVERAL months ago, a representative of a German travel magazine gave Danny Kaleikini a call and asked the "Ambassador of Aloha" to share some things about Hawaii he thought might appeal to a German tourist. Mug shotDanny wrote down a few things, sent it off and forgot it about it. Now comes a copy of ADAC, the German travel mag, which devotes its entire 196 pages to stories and photos of Hawaii. Danny shares his thoughts with those of David Hasselhoff, Steven Spielberg, Celine Dion and of course, Bette Midler. All share their favorite things about Hawaii -- or so Danny thinks. The entire magazine is written in German. More than one million copies have been distributed in Germany, which must please the HVCB ... LATEST magazine to make Hoku's papa, Don Ho, even more proud is Pollstar, devoted to the music industry. The 19-year-old is featured on the cover of the June 12 issue. Unlike so many in the MTV ranks, Hoku is quoted as saying, "My faith, friends and family are more important to me than a career." The magazine, perhaps with a tip of the hat to dad, ends the story with, "And she's not just blowing bubbles." ... The July issue of Consumer Reports has a notice of "S. Rosen's Hawaiian Toaster Bread Texas Style," whatever that is. The magazine notes that the distributing company is based in "Chicago, of course" and that the wrapper also has a recipe for French Toast. They headline the story, "From aloha to au revoir." ...

Scheuer thing

WHEN Paul Scheuer, professor emeritus at UH, opened his mail the other day, he was surprised, to say the least, to see his photo on the cover of a new book. It's entitled, "Candid Science: Conversations with Famous Chemists," by Istvan Hargittal. Scheuer is one of just 36 chemists profiled in the book, half of whom have won the Nobel Prize in chemistry. Nice company, what? One chapter profiles Scheuer's career in marine natural products chemistry, a field he invented. He receives praise from Carl Djerassi, who invented "The Pill," no less. He calls Scheuer "the father of American natural products chemistry" who "deserves much more recognition than he has received." Right now, one of his discoveries is being prepared for human testing as an anti-cancer compound. This year marks Scheuer's 50th year of teaching and research at UH ... STOPPING by for dinner at Davey Jones Ribs on Lewers the other night was none other than a man who claimed he was Davey Jones! Manager Perkin Lee thought his leg was being pulled, but the Welsh visitor produced his ID and said he was a third generation "Davey Jones." ... Yet another Baci is about to open. Baci at the Row will have an invitation-only grand premiere at Restaurant Row on June 21. Owners Bill Duval and Reza Azeri have Baci Bistro in Kailua and formerly ran the wonderful Baci Due on Waialae Avenue in Kaimuki...

Scream test

YOU'LL be able to hear the screams from all over town if 10-year-old Tatiana Echevarria is cast in an upcoming Columbia Pictures release starring Mariah Carey, which starts filming July 3. The shows producer saw the video of her winning on "Destination Stardom," filmed in Hawaii. April Masini is championing Tatiana's audition, and supplied the video that earned the youngster a screen test ...
