Hawaii
THE first radio broadcast in Hawaii took place 100 years ago tomorrow, we're told, emanating from Iolani Palace. It's untrue, we're also told, that "Uncle" Tom Moffatt emceed that program. But the 'Iolani Awards for Excellence marking that June 16, 1900, broadcast will be hosted by former Miss Universe Brook Lee Aug. 25 at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel's Monarch Room ... Meanwhile, Moffatt is promoting "Swing" on July 16 at the Monarch Room with swing sounds from the '30s, '40s and '50s, plus the newest swing tunes. You may recall that former oldies D.J. Moffatt recently did a salute to Glenn Miller at the Ilikai, where the hotel operators at the time instituted and collected a two-drink minimum charge -- $10 -- from patrons. Thanks to that fee, says Moffatt, the state is suing him, even though he never saw the money ... Hawaii radio
turns 100IT would seem Moffatt would be an odd guy for the state to be suing. In the past month or so he's promoted the Tube concert at Aloha Stadium, which brought about 15,000 visitors from Japan, adding an estimated $20 million to the state economy. And he staged the Britney Spears concert on the beach at the Hilton Hawaiian Village for Fox, where 11 million people tuned in to watch. At least some of those viewers must have been moved to plan a visit to Hawaii. In any case, Moffatt has placed the complaint against him in the good hands of attorney Jeff Portnoy ...
More Borges
IT'S been rigorous scheduling the datebook of singer Jimmy Borges of late. Last week he celebrated Cole Porter's birthday by recording a CD with Shari Lynn, "Hot for Cole." It was recorded for future broadcast at KHPR's Atherton Hall with a portion of the proceeds of CD sales benefiting KHPR ... In addition, Jimmy serenaded a tearful Sharon McDonald-Tiknis with "I'll Be Missing You" at her farewell party at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Tuesday. The development director of the academy, McDonald-Tiknis is off to join husband Michael Tiknis, late of the symphony, on the mainland ... Borges also will be filling in tomorrow night at the Kahala Mandarin's new Veranda, reunited with pianist Betty Loo Taylor, his longtime partner in rhyme. Regular singer Loretta Ables is taking the night off to practice her wedding -- no gags, please. She's marrying PR Works exec David Sayre on Sunday ... Then Borges and Betty Loo will be off to Vancouver for their annual jazz festival appearance. So much for Jimmy's "semi-retirement." I guess that means he's not driving Big Rigs anymore ...THERE'S one bit of drama awaiting those who're watching "Survivor" on CBS. Every three days the 16 who started out on a deserted island vote one member off, with the last survivor, the network tells us, winning $1 million. So who's the doofus who'll vote for the other guy once it gets down to two left? Still waiting to hear the answer to that one ...
No losers, all winners
THE 240 golfers who participated in the AT&T-REHAB Golf Shamble fund-raising tourney all came out feeling like winners. They raised a record-breaking $155,000 to help patients at the REHAB Hospital of the Pacific. Now that's what AT&T V.P. Ken Sandefur, and REHAB execs William O'Connor and Ko Miyataki call a good game ...
